Man,

There must not be too many people like me out there living in hotels. I am trying to keep up with making music and DJing, while I have to live in hotels for work. I am looking for advice on what to use to monitor. Right now I have some ultra-shitty computer speakers that completely suck. They are worthless. I have money to buy what ever I want, but I don't really think that a set of 4 inch speakers is going to be very satisfying for what we do. I was thinking about buying this:

Right now I am using a Traktor S4 as a soundcard and for DJing on the road, my turntables are too bulky. I am trying to sell it so I can get a Pioneer DDJ-SX when It comes out. I want to stay in the Serato world. Here's a link to the sale if anyone is interested:

Get some good monitor headphones.
I always suggest beyerdynamics Dt990 pro.

I have them. I need something to DJ on, that isn't super loud. Actually have Beyerdynamics.

I say get some great monitoring, open-ear headphones.

I have the Klipsch, btw. They are really nice... I like them at least...

I use krk kns8400 to produce. Not bad, only 150 dollars.

Maybe just get a single monitor to carry around seeing how they tend to be quite bulky and just do any stereo stuff like panning on your headphones? I think that would work at least

I'd think you'd run into serious trouble with hotel management if you were to use anything approaching "real" studio monitors.

I mean, I've got an old pair of Roland desktop monitors (MA-8's) whose sub causes police calls from my neighbors at half volume...

Though I know Skrillex is a mainstream artist. He uses 5 inch Genellics/Monitoring speakers/KRK's/etc... if you can buy whatever you want, that's travel-worthy.

Also headphones, change your world.. Headphones are the best + since you travel a lot you can try em on different systems wherever you go in stores and stuff off your ipod

Your best bet here really is a good pair of headphones. Most hotels are pretty strict on noise policies. Trying to use any kind of decent speaker or monitor setup will most likely result in a lot of complaints from the people around you.

What you're looking for then is technically called a near field monitor. That's what the KRK's are among others. You can spend $50 to $500 to as much as you want. Here's a link to a poll over on Gearslutz about 'em...

You're basically looking for something that's extremely clear at low volumes. Actually, come to think of it - those Roland MA-8's I have are really nice in that regard. Might be a bit heavy for regular travel though. The Fostex PMO.4n looks interesting too.

M-Audio AV40 or some KRK are pretty good for me. Any nearfields, really, just bear in mind they're very directive, the sweet spot in 1m^3. These are clear on low volume. Don't make you hotel room a night club.
