Who should open for England with Cook? Compton or Root- or someone else?

Can Australia get anywhere near SA?

Australia are going to have to play out of their socks to beat SA imo.
It wouldn't be the first time I was wrong.
I just think this series all of our big guns are firing on all cylinders.
Johnson was our undoing last time, I don't think any of their current bowlers come close to him for pace or accuracy.
Watson out is also a massive blow for Aus.
Clark's indecisive captaincy is also a bit of an issue at the moment.

Can't comment on England as I don't know the replacements.
Strauss is still a champ either way.
Cook can't do too much wrong.
Real pity about Swann as well, he's a game changer.

Johnson is either really really good or absolutely abysmal haha. He can bat a bit too though which is useful. Hilfenhaus and Siddle just aren't good enough really, don't know much about Lyon or Pattinson. Clark is a great batsman on form but I think he's definitely struggling with a failing team.

My worry with Cook is that his batting will suffer for his being the Captain, tough first tour for him to undertake too, India away is never easy!
For the openers Root is from Yorkshire and quite attacking- reminds me of Michael Vaughan, Compton is another SA born player who's a bit more steadfast, gets in and stays in. I'd prefer Root just because he's from Yorkshire but Compton is a bit more experienced so might do better under the pressure.

Yeah all the best for Swann, hopefully he'll return at some point soon (and his daughter gets better obviously!)

To be fair Compton would be a better choice considering your teams history with SA players

Think Compton will get the opening spot, he had such a strong season it's hard to deny him the chance! Not really sure how England are going to do in this series, Indias a hard place to tour at the best of times let alone with inexperienced openers and a new captain. Hoping KP doesn't cause any fuss and just gets on with the job of scoring runs, wouldn't be that surprised if he bowls a fair amount, especially if swann can't make it back.

It'll be a few years before Aus are anywhere near their best IMO. They're pushing their young players too hard which is why they keep getting injured, pat cummins latest spine injury is a perfect example. His body is still developing too much to be trying to bowl 90+ mph every delivery yet they still want to put him in the side as a strike bowler. No really promising talent coming through in their batting either!!

Really pleased for SA reaching no.1 even if it meant knocking us off the top. Definitely the most balanced side out there!

Yeah it looks more and more like compton's going to play. Root's still only 22 so hopefully he'll get a chance at some point even if compton does well this tour. Apparently Swann says he will make it back over which is good news but tbh I'd have liked to have seen two spinners in the bowling lineup- maybe rashid or even panesar- india always come with two frontline spinners and it"s served themwell at home so far .

Looking at the balance of the sides its pretty close to call, i think a lot depends on the indian bowlers as the batting lineup seems all but equal.
