So, everyone.

I have been working on a new mixing technique and wanted to have some opinions on it... New for me at least

For sections of a song, like chords and leads i usually do some heavy EQ'ing to get the sound to sit right with my mid-range bass. It depends on the sound but usually ill do cut everything below 700-800hz and shape my chords, leads, and arpeggiated leads to sit together... Taking dips from some places and giving boosts to others..

I have noticed in sections like a build up or intro.. A lot of the bass frequency's go unused and the main listening point is the leads/chords/ect..

Recently for my eq's, ill place them in an audio effect rack and automate the on off switch. On one eq i might open up the low end down to 400hz... On another i might boost 1-2khz..

And this goes for basslines, vocals, drums as well.

Just wondering what you guys think about this technique.

If it sounds good go with it. Personally I sidechain a lot of EQ's and try to do a lot of filtering/EQ cutting too.

Yeah why not, I also EQ my synths different in the drop and intro/breakdown.

I've been cutting up the final track and mastering it in sections.
dunno sorta familiar.
Had decent results.

EQ gets automated just like everything else. All about the organic evolution of the track.

Perish the thought! Moving faders and shit while the track runs through is how people used to mix before computers existed you know.

Recently i have been trying this out...

I create an audio rack and have two different EQ's.... one cutting out a lot of the FQ's that the bass takes up.. The other leaving them in... Then i will go into the chain selector and fade between the two. At this point i put the fader on the macro knob.

Then ill slowly evolve the sound. In the Intro i might have the synths as full as possible until a bar before the drop.

See my sig tracks, I sidechain drums to dip EQ's in the lead synths at the frequencies of snares/claps (and kicks sometimes). I also subtly change EQ cuts e.g. in a breakdown I'll cut the sub entirely as standard but to makeup for it I might release the EQ I have on my string section so it has more bass (I'd normally cut strings off at say 100-200Hz), then when the track kicks back to the "drop" and the sub returns I'll have the EQ on the strings automate back up to cut off the low end to prevent muddiness. Same could be done with layered synths and vocals.
