was gonna post this in the random thoughts thread, then thought yolo, fuck it.

Anyway, which genre in your IMO has the best mainstream? For me, it's either Hip Hop or Disco.

Don't care whether you don't like this track (you probs don't), but just an example:

Hip Hop

D.I.S.C.O.

Discuss, and please don't rinse my CPU with walls of youtubes. :4:

Of course, yes, UKG wins.

Mainstream DnB is 99% horrible.

As much as I like dnb i must disagree, imo people like netsky make poo and the people into that type of more commercial dnb are the worst shirts-off sweaty wankers about

Metal used to have a semi decent mainstream pre all that nu-metal crap and screamo etc.
I don't even know what is "mainstream" anymore, don't listen to the radio, MTV doesn't play videos, and most new music I happen upon.

Stuff like, blues, grunge (in its mainstream hay-day) and reggae must all be up there.

ukg obvs wins but just to put it out there... the mainstream artists that could be termed "neo-soul" are (were) some of the best - d'angelo, lauryn hill, alicia keys, amy winehouse

most of them are rubbish, missing or dead now tho...

bit of a stretch but do you want your thread to die or not

I'm gonna say mainstream is something that charted, or something that has like, bare views on youtube or something. Basically, if you have to think "Has anybody else ever heard this?", for the sake of this thread, we're not calling it mainstream.

Grunge is a shout, purely for Nirvana.

blues is an interesting one cos before the 50s/60s could even the most successful blues artists have been strictly mainstream? was all considered "race music" before a point, and white people would cover the successful songs in the black charts and get to number one in the "mainstream chart"

if there is no time restriction i would say jazz and blues wins though

I'd say that mainstream blues was probably the most influential of all genres that went mainstream (not necessarily the best though)
Cream
The Rolling Stones
Hendrix
etc.
