yeah you just answered the question yourself OP, it is the backbone for a lot of the more popular stuff now. But that has nothing to do with the initial popularity, back when Midnight Request Line was made I doubt Skream even knew what Massive was, and that tune is arguably what kickstarted dubstep's popularity
to be honest I wouldn't even put dubstep under EDM man, everyone who says they're into EDM is into music thats very different from what dubstep is. Just "bass music" is fine with me aha

The best parties I've ever experienced were in basements that could hardly fit 100 people with respect for dance room. Sweaty, dark, smoke filled rooms from 2006-07.

Massive is a decent synth that you can do a lot with - most of james blakes album is with massive (& a prophet 08)
It sounds plasticy raw but if you process/mix it well its as good as you make it.
