Hi Everyone

How are you all doing?

I just thought i would post this thread to see if anyone else had an interest in the type of equipment and production and mixing techniques that go into Blawan and Karenn tracks

Not that i am one for ever replicating some ones style but as a purely technical stand point i thought this thread by interesting none the less

so heres a link to an example from Blawan

let me know what you guys think about what he's done in terms of drum programming and eq/compression and possibly effect processing techniques

Cheers Nick

hiya, we've had a couple of threads on this subject already:

http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=178990

http://www.dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=220170

basically many posters boiled it down to this:

1. organic percussion/found sounds - sometimes layered with analogue drum hits
2. low passed real kicks with interesting EQ work/saturation to get that low end thump
3. pitch envelopes on percussion sounds - especially blawan's earlier stuff - to get those pitched percussion sounds - and arranging them to make a kind of rhythmic hook
4. some people thought to use the warping in ableton on percussion sounds to get that twisted sound but it can degrade the audio
5. groove/swing in the percussion patterns - use your sequencer groove/swing function or manually place certain offbeat hits off the grid to get swing
6. creative drum buss processing - tape emulation, desk emulation, multiband compression etc.

another thing to keep in mind is his production methods seem to have changed - in karenn and with the analogue cops he uses all hardware based setups - theres a thread on gearslutz about his equipment (plus a nice photo) - http://www.gearslutz.com/board/electron ... setup.html

in his solo productions it seems to be hardware backed with ableton live - his earliest tunes (iddy/fram on hessle) were all software based. ever since then i'm pretty sure he's been incorporating hardware into his setup.

Dave Smith Tempest + Sherman Filterbank = a fair amount of the sounds in new Karenn stuff.
