im not sure if this has been covered but can someone give a good explaination on what filtering is and when/how it should be used?

what does it all mean?

A HPF (high pass filter) attenuates frequences below a certain chosen frequency. It allows frequencies higher than the chosen frequency to pass through.

A LPF (low pass filter) attenuates frequences above a chosen frequency. It allows frequences lower than the chosen frequency to pass through.

A HPF and LPF combined in series creates a BPF (band pass filter) which attenuates frequencies above one point and below a different point and allows the frequencies in between to pass through.

Those filters are found in analog synths that use subtractive synthesis; they subtract sound from waveform(s) to synthesize sounds. VCF's are voltage controlled filters and they typically correspond to these types of filters.

HPF's are also found on some microphones to reduce low frequency rumble or handling noises.

also most of the time you will have a freq/cut off knob and a resonance knob for each filter

use the freq/cutoff knob to find the freq that you think sounds best, then the res knob to increase the volume of that particular freq, be warned tho, crankin the res right up can be fatal for ur speakers
