Ya I know don't be a preset monkey, but I learn better when I dissect presets for some reason, and I'm relatively new to Massive. Anyone know of any good preset packs out there?

You ain't gonna learn anything by watching presets. Just watch some tutorials, to get the idea how the synth works. Then make your own presets. The more presets you make, the better you get.

I think you got things mixed up yt tutorials just make you click without thinking while watching a preset makes you think why something sounds like it does.

Sick preset packs are filled with synths tons of others used. ud feel alot better about yourself making your own synth

Coming from someone who only uses presets

As for Mr. Eridu, I think the Massive built-in presets are enough to 'wonder why it sounds like it does'.

really don't care about opinions here, I learned Sylenth1 pretty well dissecting some of Adam Van Baker's presets. any names of packs are greatly appreciated, thank you.

Why are some of you guys bashing his way of learning synths? Some people learn in different ways than others, if you did not know. He's not saying he's gonna use presets and make a song..
I learned massive by doing the same thing
@OP, presets that came with massive are def good to tear apart, and that high rankin pack ofc

Sounds rather inefficient. If i could spend 10 or 20 bucks on an amazing bank that would teach me the synth id do it instantly. Dont have any names for you, not a big massive user.

everyone needs to work on their reading comprehension or something. it's like most of you saw "massive presets" and didn't bother to read the rest..

I think what the op does is a great way to learn.

You learn a lot along the way though. Because as well as learning what works to make the "x" generic sound, you also learn what doesn't work. Do whatever though I really couldn't care less. Just my own personal experiences.

Funny/weird replies going on in this thread. Patch dissection is probably the best way of learning a synth hands down. Telling someone to learn through trial and error is like telling someone not to get a formal education "don't go learn that physics degree, just fuck around under an apple tree for half an hour" yeah great advice there Some people on here are worth listening too, some not, Join date and post count are usually a good indicator, but not always, though you'll notice the older members are usually the one's with their heads screwed on.

Can't help you on the patch pack front though... Not a massive user myself.

Try to follow some NI Massive-tutorials on youtube! Best way to learn how it works...loading some .ksd files wouldnt teach you how to use this program^^

Am I right in presuming you've never taken the time to reverse engineer a synth patch? I for one have tried pretty much every approach to learning synthesis, from reading books to watching tutorials to trial and error, to basic experimentation to patch dissection. I've personally found, as have others that I've spoken to that can also attest to this, whom incidentally I would trust the opinion of over a lot of randoms on the Internet, that reverse engineering patches similar in essence to a sound you're trying to make is the best way of learning a synths architecture and workflow for the kind of sound you're after.

Don't knock it till you've tried it, and at that, don't knock it till you've done it enough to judge it's effectiveness over other approaches.

I personally find video tutorials to be very linear and passive. Actually having a patch to dig in to in your own way, on your own terms, with no guidance engages you much more technically and creatively. Having someone mutter numbers at you while you see the mouse move about, at least to me, is quite a bit more limited. But each to their own of course.

BTW, you don't fuck about with the patch it's self. You open one instance, find a patch you like, open another instance, init the patch and go about re-creating the patch from the first instance using the first as a rough guide, how you go about doing that is entirely up to you.

Looking at an oscilloscope and spectral analyzer while dicking around in your synth is really helpful, especially for basses and plucks. Having a visual reference of how your sound behaves after various operations helps your ear understand what you're doing more effectively. Synth manuals and audio processing pages on wikipedia is also very helpful.
