Days of Glory.
French film highlighting the struggle soldiers from the French colonies (particularly Algeria) had during the war. Not only the struggle of having to fight for a country that wasn't theirs in a world alien to them but also the struggle of being treated like second rate by the army for whom they were fighting.
All in all, a very good movie. Good characters you can really feel for and some fairly decent war scenes (although nothing special effects wise like Saving Private Ryan).
DY's Rating (out of five 'rewinds'), a respectable four.
American readers, (correct me if I'm wrong) I understand you're adverse to films with subtitles. Don't be afraid, there's a whole world of superior, subtitled films out there to be embraced!

"The Battle of Algiers"
another good french colony related flick. Again subtitles.
and a landmark in "mockumentary" film-making.

Were you recommending me that or is it a spooky coincidence that you watched it last?
Never seen it but heard it's good.
I want to watch Lives of Others next.

Taxidermia: "Gyorgy Palfi's grotesque tale of three generations of men, including an obese speed eater, an embalmer of gigantic cats, and a man who shoots fire out of his penis."
Fun and little bit disturbing movie

heard good things about that.
i watched Calvaire last night (beligian film, translated as 'The Ordeal') It's pretty disturbing with mild crucifixion and an array of belgian headcases running around the middle of a forest doing things to animals.
nice.

Likewise, although for completely different reasons...
The last film I watched was either Silent Running or The Empire Strikes back. It was a few weeks ago either way, so I can't remember which was most recent...

bordertown
based on the juarez murders, jenifer lopez stars as an investivagtive journalist looking into the unsolved murders of 400 women. movie was torn between being a thriller, a piece of drama and, of course, a jlo flick, so all i got out of it at the end was dreams of being attacked by "el diablo" and having to slaughter him before he killed me first.
the end.

LA Story, last night. Much funnier now that I live in LA.
Britannia Hospital, a week ago. Part 3 in Lindsay Anderson's Mick Travis trilogy. A bit too '80s with too many characters. I much preferred the cold and impersonal/distanced feel of the previous 2 films.
If, two weeks ago. Part 1 in Lindsay Anderson's Mick Travis trilogy. A product of the times, but this kind of thing still resonates today, albeit quietly. It's like Scum set in a public school.

Possibly one of the greatest films, ever.

Based on true events, shockingly. His friend drank some awful chemical concoction that made him go blind, in real life.
