depends on what your qualifiers for a "great film" are...
-if you mean the movie is "great" enough for people to be willing to pay money to see regardless of the outcome, the $2.1+ billion speaks for itself
-if you mean "great" enough for people to have an emotional response to initiate a social movement, the money speaks for itself again (as well as the hype and this thread, sixteen years after the film's release)
-if you mean "great" enough for the majority of popular movie critics to give it the thumbs up, and an above average response from the audience (all hype considered), I suppose you could make an argument for that as well.
-if you mean "great" enough for a minority to find some sort of higher depth and intellectual meaning comparative to other films outside of its particular genre, it definitely appears to fall short.
-if you mean "great" as in you enjoyed the film subjectively... yep.
A tedious three hour exercise in overly melodramatic nonsense. The script is poor, Leo's acting at this point is sub par and James Cameron should have stuck to his strength in making action films.

and yeah, James Cameron definitely failed to raise the bar with this one imo

i appreciate james cameron's detail constructing part of the ship, and his casting choices. i mean c'mon billy zane's delivery of b movie one liners are so funny, it relegates titanic to near classic. fabrizio? the walking italian stereotype? ''aaaye it's a-me fabrizio! the boats they're all a-gone!'' eternally sadfaced victor garber? oh. and the fucking script. it's so bad it's good..''titanic was like a slave ship, taking me to america in chains''. you know because having to marry caldon hockley=slavery. the constant whining... ''nobody cares about me! nobody notices me! my polo pony is the wrong color!i'm gonna kill myself because i can't bear to go to another cotillian!'' slavery! i'm a slave, my life is so miserable!''
imo, titanic is the only movie that runs for 3 hours..that doesn't actually feel like 3 hours. it's not the best movie in the world, but there are aspects of the film i really enjoy if you're in the mood for some melodrama.
