so i'v been learning alot these past few weeks with my new program..

check out this sample clip of a new track i'v been working on.

Soundcloud

i went -3 on the volume of the master channel at the drop, let me know if it's too loud.

also, i'v been doing slight mixing as i'v been going along using headphones, and I can't quite tell if the sub is too loud or too quiet. these headphones i'v been told are generally quiet anyways thats why I'm asking about the volume.

I should have my new studio monitors set up in a few weeks, as for i have been getting ready to move.

the volume is ok for me. its more loud than quiet ;-) some of your channels could been more processed with an eq. but thats another thing you not asked for ;-)

could you specify which parts need better eq? I'm trying to get better at this so any little advice/ or "enlightenment" is very much needed. is something not punching through in the mix that should be?

like I said I'v been learning alot about mixing and stuff within ableton... but it it's a never-ending process I'm constantly learning ways to do exactly what I want with sounds.... but still...I'm a noob when it comes to production, only been producing and learning for about a year... things take time.

Ok first of all loved the intro - 14: it sounded pretty nice/chill which was a plus for me the build up sounded aery intense which I thought was good and the drop was killer, the only thing about it that was "ehh" about the drop was that the synth didn't mix well this the wobble which was kick ass. And please add a little more sub. Overall it was pretty good, keep it up man I would love to see more from you.

thanks for the critique man, gives me inspiration.

I'll try different things with the synth part of the drop... see if I can't make something better.

is the volume of the sub too low? I just didn't want to over-do it

i think you can process every channel more with an eq. The most unneeded frequencies you will find in the area between 250 and 900 Hz. Most instruments sounds quickly better when you cut this frequencies a bit. --> Loudness effect ;-)

for an optimal analysis i use a spectrum analyzer (eg. http://www.voxengo.com/product/span/ its free and fantastic ;-)

from 1:20 you have a pad and a gated synth together. some frequencies overlaps each other. analyse the both channels with a spectrumanalyser and compare the spectrums.
try to balance each channel to the other --> example: if you cut the pad about 700Hz, cut the gated synth about 1kHz. so the synth have more room in the 700Hz area and the synth have more room in the 1kHz area.

to find out mudd frequencies, take an EQ, take a band (set iup a very small Q-value) lift it up to +10dB and comb the whole frequency range. Where it sounds very bad and painfull, cut it (off course, if its not wanted to be painfull ;-)

generally:

bassdrum
- lift up between 50-100Hz: This adds base to the bassdrum
- cut between 250-800Hz --> this is mud and is not needed. And automaticly other instruments become more presence in this area

snare
- lift up a bit on 150-240 Hz: It gives the snare more power
- lift up on 6-8kHz: gives more presence

hats/cymbals/crashs
- cut everything less than 1-2kHz, its generally not needed
- lift up between 8-12kHz: adds brightness
(- i often use also a stereowider/-enhancer to spread out the hats in the stereoimage)

bassline
- 250-800Hz: mud! cut it
- i also often cut a little bit between 90-110Hz to give the kickdrum more room in this area

strings:
- 250-800Hz: mud! cut it
- lift up by 6-12kHz: adds brightness and clarity

But do not cut simply the whole range between 250 and 800Hz. You have to try out if its better to cut on 300Hz or if it sounds better when you cut about 450Hz --> But somewhere between 250 and 800Hz you find a lot freqs which sounds bad/agressive/muddy.
