I was watching this at 2:45 and it got me thinking. Instead of highpassing your bass at 80-120hz and inserting a mono sub below that, would it be just as effective taking that main bass and just highpassing the "side" of the bass and keeping the "mid" relatively as is, or at least highpassing that part not as much?

You can do that, but by having a separate sub channel gives you more overall control as its in its own channel ect...
I tend to do mid-side eq after I buss all the basses together anyway towards the end for a final polish and tweak

this is the way to go,but sometimes when your resampling especially where you have a sound that the pitch bends it my be easier to split asap then and keep an uneffected version just for the mono low end.

Why unaffected, you could bend the mono sub in a similar fashion, no?

You have more control with a pure sine wave, by using a sine you just ensure you have more control over the mixdown, and also the quality of the low end.

Aslong as you can bring out the sub weight on the mid part of the bass, then it could definitely work. I think the problem would stem from basses where there are lots of effects which is going to mess with the low end, and not give it the weight that a sine-based sub has. Interesting idea though.
