If you attract the attention of the right people, its definitely worth it.

That guy, fully named Sodapoppin, does a WoW stream and got that from some bored kid from an oil biz family or something.

reckful seems to earn a fair penny from WoW streaming (i've donated to him in the past), maybe Hydra does too but he isn't flashy about it.

edit: actually read the thread you linked :6: lol Dakkroth only wishes he could get that kind of dough, warlock streams are :H: though

Plenty of people make money from streaming, enough do it full time on twitch. If you have enough of a fanbase it's worth it (but like anything building a dedicated viewerbase takes time).
Take someone from the e-sports domain and it's like a supplemental income on top of what they get for events and sponsorship.
Hell you can make money off youtube as well, some of the more popular let's players make a living from that.
While I'm not a partner on twitch, I do make a little bit of money off youtube for what is mainly video game content.

the trickle-down effect in action? such payments are truly exceptional of course but as deadly says, one could make a living of sorts even without such massive payments.

Yes, but you'd be amazed by what popular youtubers/streamers make as well.
You know that some content creators for games like TF2 have made like $500k in a year for modeling virtual hats as well right?
Video games generate billions each year.
E-Sports is still in it's infancy and a recent LoL tournament had over $3mil in prizes.

I've seen charity streams and such where the same people donate thousands multiple times over the course of the stream. Some people have lots of disposable income and share the wealth.
Last one I watched was a 72 hour one and they raised $34,271.69 in that period.

I would love to do this actually. You get your choice gaming platform, a capture card, mics, camera ect., and a youtube/twitch account or something of the likes, then boom...potentially the next big name in gaming. Worth it if you can make a name for yourself.

Yeah, not that simple. That's like saying get a couple turntables, a mixer, some vinyl, boom at the DMC championships.
