Im not really understanding how this works. Im trying to get a track ready for mastering and I am supposed to have it peak at -6db if its in 24bit. But the thing is I dont even know if I am doing so. Ive checked numerous threads on the ableton forum and here and cant seem to find an answer.. Can someone school me on this real quick> It would be much appreciated! Thanks guys

Do you mean your trying to find if your actually using 24bit project setting?

i believe you are talking about headroom, and as far as i know bits are not that related to headroom, having 24 bits vs 16 bits just gives your music more responsiveness to the mastering effects you use, -6db, the headroom you are aiming for is just there to give you space while you master, and is completley up to your preferences, i know people who leave -15db of headroom and some others that use -12, it is completely up to you.

if you are using logic when you bounce the project in the settings tab theres one option that says 24, 16 and 8 bit i believe

Different bit rates doesnt give you more headroom, but it does give you more dynamic range between peak level and the noise floor. So the lower level your peaks are, the less dynamic range you have and technically the less bits you are using. -6db isnt gonna make that much difference though, and if thats whats the mastering engineer wants then give it to them.

Anyway, I dont know about ableton, but with logic, the project isnt set at any particular bit rate, I think it works at 32-bit float, but like mentioned above, you can then export to different bit rate settings, so maybe it is like that in ableton?

In Ableton go to options, then the record tab (5th one down), the second option down sets up the bit depth for recording into the daw for bounce downs, sampling etc. For exporting go to File then Export audio, the bit depth for export can be set from here (8th option down), hope this helps.

Bit rate is directly related to digital headroom peoples. Read ups.
