I have just purchased an iPod touch (2nd generation) and have loaded some mp3, WAV (16 bit & 24 bit) & AIFF samples onto it with the idea that I can connect it to my Akai S6000 hardware sampler to record the audio of the samples to my sampler.

When I try to record the samples to the analogue input of the sampler, some of the samples are showing no signal coming in or the signal is very low and the audio sounds distorted, even when the iPod volume and sampler's recording volume are at max. There seems to be no logical connection in the samples that won't record/play properly (i.e. some 24 bit WAV files play & record fine, but some don't etc.). The strange thing is that when I try the same samples through my iPod headphones or through a speaker, they play fine.

I am using a mini stereo jack to 1/4" stereo jack lead to make the connections between the iPod and the sampler and am recording the analogue input. Can anyone shed any light as to why this might be happening? Perhaps I need a specific type of Apple cable to connect the iPod to the sampler?

so you're going from stereo mini jack to one channel of mono? That's one problem....also....why are you sampling an already digital source? Surely you can just load these audio files directly on the Akai sampler rather that going digital to analog, then back to digital again. Your workflow is the problem.

Swerver - thanks for your reply. Of course you are right about the stereo into mono - stupid brainless mistake on my part ... but thanks for pointing it out. I'm now using a twin jack breakout cable into the sampler which has solved the signal problems ...

I understand why you're asking about the digital to analogue to digital thing. As far as I'm aware, there is no way of me getting these samples loaded directly into the sampler. The sample files are on my iMac (& iPod). I have an external SCSI CD-Rom drive connected to the sampler, but last time I tried, the sampler wouldn't recognise any CD disk that isn't Akai formatted. I don't know how to produce Akai formatted CD disks and even if I could make them, I presume that I would then have the problem of my iMac not recognising them, so I probably wouldn't be able to copy the files onto the disks anyway. I have an old software program called AkaiDisk which came with the sampler which may do the job, but this won't load onto my iMac as its now incompatible (can't find an updated version). Also, the Akai only recognises WAV files as far as I'm aware. I have very little knowledge in this area, so its possible that there is a solution that I don't know about.
