just wondering if anyone has a favorite when it comes to nice, squelchy acid sounds or just hard, driving distorted screeches. i've personally noiticed sylenth1 to be nice but lacks a bit of low end?
dunno, i cant afford to buy one so i figure i'd find a good VST to do the job...

Albino? Massive can't do it as far I can tell

ill try that. i've been wanting to try albino.
btw, Massive does have a wavetable called "Acid" that you might wanna try. i've gotten a few nice resonated squelch sounds out of it

To be honest I just don't like the sounds of massive. Good for stabs and neurofunk but too clinical for my liking. I really want to get my own hardware synth and just record that, that squelch is mostly from the filter anyway so if you find a good stand-alone module you're sorted.

That actually sounds alright
Bit too soft though, in my opinion. That's my general opinion of soft synths though. I am pretty impressed by the DnB fat bass, though. I'd actually consider using it for that purpose after hearing it. The distorted bass sounds a bit rough otherwise, nice mids and treble for pads and stabs though

I like the look of that D16 plug, was looking at it a few days ago, their stuff seems pretty nice.
Atm for 303ish sounds I use Vanguard.

You can get really great 303 clones for like 250 dolla. Hand-build stuff with quality components.

Nice! Analogue smashes it every time

Wow, great info guys. Many thanks!
I'll try some more of these soft synths, and who knows... maybe a 303 will be my first hardware purchase!
Thanks again.

Yeah, the D16 one is a TB-303 software clone that should sound pretty close to the original hardware. According to them and their graphs at least. Looks quite similar too!

I'd still suggest a modular synth over a 303, more versatile and can be easily modified over time. You can probably pick up the basics for one as 2 VCOs, an LFO, filter, and VCA for $200, if that.

The G-Sonique Alien303 is pretty good imo.

Try unsynched lfo's *subtly* modulating distortion, pitch shift to simulate analog drift/slop. Use a delay, very short delay time...feedback to taste, overdrive this into a LPF to darken the tone, probably some resonance. You want a short enough delay that it's more of a thickening effect like a chorus than a real delay. <---just some general tips on making things sound a bit more analog ish.

You could also make the envelope add to the distortion, recreating the intensity-distortion ratio of actual saturation

there's a whole rabbit's hole that is making things sound analog.

The legendary silver box which is hallmark in electronic music has been recreated in AudioRealism Bass Line. Analog modeling techniques have been employed to create a DSP-algorithm that accurately emulates every aspect of the original Bass Line, from growling basses to hollow middles and beeping highs with metal rattling accents. Patterns are composed in a fashion similar to the original Bass Line using the integrated step sequencer with easy to use manipulation functions such as transpose and randomization.
Can't recommend this one enough

Certainly is. Having worked a bit with a few pieces analog gear, some "high end" and "low end" software emulations, and searching for that vibe through my own sound sculpting I thought I'd just offer a small bit of a method anyone with a standard DAW and native plug ins can do. I think the real key that helped me understand why analog sounds the way it does is reading the white papers on a some of the emulations.
