It sounds more natural. If you hit a drum in real life twice does the first sound continue after the second strike? (obviously not including echoes or reverb)

Also I'm sure it helps eliminate mud as you would be stacking the same/similar frequencies on top of each other

forsure, but i've heard of this technique also being used with hats and rides...

for example,
4 on 4 rides being choked by whenever the high hat hits?

and what exactly is it doing to the sound? just cutting the volume? or just stopping playback of whatever sample completely

It stops the sample currently playing when another is played. What DAW are you using? I can tell you how to do it on FL if you want to play with it

It's not really something you need a tutorial on. It's literally stopping a sample when another plays, experiment with it yourself and see what you come up with

If you were playing drums you would hit a cymbal then grab hold of it to kill the vibrations and shorten the sound. Volume automation will recreate it pretty well.

I've started to use a lot of crazy sample action in FL's step sequencer (which, up until now, is pretty alien to me), and I'd like to know your method to see if I'm doing it right or not :v
