Anyone know anything about the legality of charging money to convert vinyl to digital formats?
There's plenty of companies that provide this service commercially, I'm thinking of setting up a small scale business to do this but still skeptical about the legality of it.

I mean morally, there nothing wrong with it really as if someone has bought the record and wants you to record a digital copy, all your are doing is being paid for the service, and they already have bought the record so its not like stealing music. However I'm pretty sure that it is deemed illegal to copy any music format, be it downloading an mp3 and giving it to your mate, copying a cassette to another one, or creating digital copies from vinyl. As you said though, there are companies that do this work running already, and there are products on sale, like the usb turntables that the only way it can really be used, is to record digital copies, so you wouldnt think it would be that much of a problem if these things are allowed to be sold.

Nah it's not illegal to copy any music you have as long as it's for personal use

no it is.
I'm not saying its bad, im obviously not against it, but it is illegal to copy music, even if it is for yourself, but obviously who is to know, no one is ever gonna get done for it cos its impossible to tell.

in the UK it is - there is no equivalent of 'Fair Use' in the UK's copyright law. You would be
extremely unlucky to be prosecuted for infringement if you copied your vinyl collection to CD/Digital, but strictly speaking you would certainly be in breach of the law.
As for setting up a business converting vinyl to digital or whatever: I'm no expert, but I would imagine that you could offer such a service for profit if it were subject to some kind of general disclaimer putting the responsibility on the customer. And morally, I don't think anyone other than the legal departments of major labels would object.

It's 100% legal in the UK to back up what you own.
