3 osc for basslines learn how to use this properly
paino roll for different Frequencies

Kick on the 1 snare on the 3 is kinda the rule with drums

yeah, he's right but don't stick to close with it, just play around, find the style u like. i like to mix it up with breaks or try complete different stuff.
i think especially dubstep is kinda genre that shouldn't follow any rules too much. anyway, rules are made to be broken

You haven't read the Ordinances, Zoning and Regulatory Codes Applicable to the Production of Dubstep and Related Sub-Bass Musics manual???
and um... you don't "set" a tune to half-time.. half-time is music-speak for when a tune is running at a certain BPM (say in the case of dubstep 140 BPM - which is arguably a fast tempo at 4/4) but it feeeeels like it is running at a tempo of 70 BPMs because really a kick on the 1 and a snare on the 3 at 140 BPM is a beat that is half as fast as a beat that has a kick on the 1 snare on the 2 kick on the 3 snare on the 4 at 140 BPMs - the latter beat at 70 BPM would sound just as fast as the former at 140 BPM -
this is basic music theory
