The original artist? Will it infringe copyright, even though it is free and no royalties would be payed out to the original artist?

a friend of mine hosted a dubstep remix of a well known artists on his own website and got sued for it.
so if you do it, put i out on a site like mediafire or zippyshare and make sure that it can't be tracked down that you uploaded it.

Its usually fine as long as its significantly different, if its basically the same as the original with a few changes then no.

Always good manners to ask first though.

if you can ask then do, if it's not awful they probably won't mind if you're not selling it

Eh, I've done it. I had to take down the last one I did, but that's just because it's gonna be on the artist's next remix ep haha
I also have a bootleg remix coming out on a label soon though, so we'll see if I get sued :P

Would be the label that would be sued, if anyone, right?

Isn't Baauer getting sued for Harlem Shake? That was given away as a free.. unless after the dance craze hype he decided to cash in on it. If he did then fuck that guy I hope he gets sued to shit.

If by contract you mean, "hey wanna put out this unlicensed remix for me" "yeah" then it's all good.
