Would anybody with a decent amount of experience be down to "mentor" me? I'm pretty much looking for 5minutes a day where I get assigned homework by somebody, get linked useful stuff when its come across, make sure im staying focused, etc. Nothing major, I don't want a babysitter as I'm a workhorse already, I'm just looking for a couple people who will help push me in the right direction.

This website IS your mentor. You can gain all of the things you listed above from just reading through this site.

This thought - asking people to help point me in the right direction about a coupla things, esp. mixdowns and such - had actually occurred to me too recently. It's a brave thing to stand up and say "hey, I need some help over here" sometimes... so props for that.

Thing is though:

What specifically are you trying to learn? Are you seeking more direction in your own productions because you don't like the way they sound? If so, what is it that sounds wrong?

Because as the saying goes, opinions are like assholes - everybody's got one. I'd be hesitant to just up and offer yourself as a pupil for any old self-proclaimed "guru" around here. There are many here who fancy themselves to be "pro level" that don't know the first thing about some fundamental shit like phase alignment or when/how NOT to compress just because they've had a 500 pressing run on vinyl at some point; conversely, most of the more talented people in this regard just don't have the time/interest in giving away what they've learned over X amount of years. Hell, even I'm this way sometimes (but am trying to get away from that.)

Figure out what you wanna learn, go hard at it, and after you've done that if you still have questions that are specific and not easily answered via google... that's when you seek out an expert in that realm and bug them for answers... either that or just enroll in a recording arts class of some sort (SAE, etc.)

There are threads for days for anything you would ever need to know (mostly)

Are you looking for payed tuition? or just somebody to help out?

Sure, someone could help you learn the basics - but once you understand how to use your tools, it just comes down to practice and dedication.

There is tons and tons of info on the web, your best bet is to start studying! Learn your plugins, read the manuals and see what everything does. Study some music theory, there's tons of free tutorials on Youtube. Also Point Blank and Dubspot release free tutorials on all sorts of stuff every week which are pretty good.

day one:complex drums-in the studio spend 8 -16 hours playing with making beats. start with one and make as many variations on it you can. Rolls, fills, micro edits any new takes on that beat.
day two out of the studio: listen to any music thats new to you, you can. makes notes for samples. you could also watch a movie with a recorder on stand by.
day three: with your new samples chop add to sampler experiment add to your beats. start to arrange
day four: start mixing your track and figure out what else it could use. you'll know what it needs because you just mixed all the elements...add it.
day five: go have some fun
day six:finish mixdown make final changes
day seven:

come to my apartment & bring me fresh vegetables every week from the grocery store

Bible, Youtube tuts, studying other songs, midi remixing, Layering sounds, Learn music theory, learn sound design. Finish knowledge with effects. 10,000 hours, 18 hours a day for a year and five months.

took my own advice besides the complex drumming. Came up with knitting-factory in my sig...not bad sdvice if you ask me
