"A first-rate city with a second-rate country attached." That is how one rather brutal friend of mine describes London.
He happens to be an American

Nice, wub. Now my thread's going to get pkay'd.
gwa - we'll probably just implement a series of charges for people visiting the city from the barbarous provinces outside the M25... if you're coming in to do something I approve of, like play football or buy me dinner, tourist visas will be available at £1LDN per day, but if you're coming in to take our jobs and women you're going to need clearance from the embassy and to pass an exam on the Tube map.
The practical upshot, of course, is that every major UK town will need a London embassy and therefore get a tiny slice of the promised land placed right on their filthy soil. You're welcome, heathens.

Selective quoting will ruin us all, lets not shimmy around the facts.

Don't Cornwall and Yorkshire want to be their own states too? This devolution will end up with each town having it's own government and tax system and all the proud xenophobes feeling like they are independent while having to follow all the rules of some EU/World superstate and actually having less real representation and independence.
Although seeing as I'm from London and the rest of the country seem to love to bitch on about us and the power/money it has compared to them even though London pays for them (top 10 London boroughs pay 4.5 times the stamp duty to the UK government than Scotland Wales and N Ireland combined), then if you can't beat them join them, London would be a much richer place if it was a republic and kept it's own ££.

How would they enforce this? Build a big fuck off wall around London? I seem to remember another city with a big fuck off wall involved, they had to call David Hasselhoff to knock it down eventually.
Baywatch is off the air now...what will you do when the barricades need to fall?

I'd reply to you properly, but I'm too busy thinking up rhyming slang and getting coin like a champion.

No wall needed, we'll just extend the congestion charge zone. Nobody walks or uses public transport outside the M25 anyway; that's why they're all too unfit to get up for work.

Statistically, people who have lived in London for a period of more than 3yrs are smarter, richer and more amicable than those who have not.

For some reason this all reminds me of these books I read as a kid:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Predator_Cities
No UK anymore, just cities roaming around devouring each other for resources. Personally I wouldn't mind that future since London would clearly fuck everything else up.
