What exactly does layering mean? Does it mean that you just pack on different sounds in the same time signature? I'm a little confused on that

Snare on 1, clap on 1.

Simple as that.
2 samples 'layered' on top (in time or if you want, a little bit offtime) of eachother.

Also, seeing as you've posted quite a lot of really simple questions lately: try using google first considering your questions are definitely easy to be answered by google.

Yes, I have been posting alot. I like to see how people phrase it in better modern communication rather than the extremely technicals from websites. Ask questions get answers right? =], but yes I will try google as well, we need to use every resource there is to offer

Everyone was new at some point and production is fucking huge, man. It's daunting. I jumped into the deep and started making tunes, because I had no idea how daunting that shit was. But to a newby, i could understand why they'd want some guidance in the beginning.

If this is about production and keeping the quality of the production forum high, how are you at all contributing to that by calling names, making fun of him or calling him retarded? I think it's a stupid question too, but you're allowed to make stupid questions when you're new and don't know what the fuck you're doing or even know what's 'technical lingo' and what isn't. The only thing more stupid here than his question is people who KNOW it belittling the dude for it.

No shame in asking basic questions man. If you guys don't wanna spend your time answering them, then don't. It's not like these questions are excessively taking up all the space on this forum or anything. Until they do, there's no reason to bitch about them. You can always google pretty much anything, even complicated questions, but sometimes it's nice to ask actual people because maybe they'll do more than just give you a basic definition. maybe they'll elaborate and tell you the uses of layering that are specific to dubstep.

To the OP - like you said, layering simply means to use 2 or more sounds at the same time. I like to layer my snares and basslines (ie a lower frequency sub bass and a higher frequency bass), and sometimes leads or chords. Some of my songs have upwards of 4 snare drums hitting at the same time. some might call that excessive, but to each their own.

Though it's usually good practice to tune sounds and EQ the bits you like and don't like of each sound to make them sound good together. But don't worry about layering sounds too much when you're just starting out. Just get some nices kicks and snares on their own. Get into layering when you're more confident in your production and have a better ear for it.

Not to sound like the enemy here, but if you were to just type in the keywords on Youtube, there are tons of videos showing, and explaining these things. Just sayin'.

It has audio examples embedded so you can hear the changes in sound as the article progresses.

That doesn't just go for drums either this also matters for synth's as well. Seems like everyone else has said pretty much the same thing in a more detailed sense as well.

This. The production board is a wasteland these days. Its not surprising really as Ive noticed about 7-8 people making fun of every new poster. Why not explain layering samples and synths can be a good way of thickening up a sound etc instead of taking the piss? Its about as much effort as posting a piss-poor joke.

That being said - it's pretty lame that someone doesn't know how to use Google in 2013. Typing in "layering music production" takes 2 seconds, it's faster than waiting for a response from a forum!

Tbh I find it pretty amusing people are defending this thread and the op, and 'shaming' the people who posted shitty responses. Anyone who understands the English language enough to construct a post asking what layering is, should understand the actual meaning of the word layering and think about applying it to music. Granted the OP is probably new to producing, but I'm fairly sure if someone said to me when I started out 'man you need more layers in those sounds' I could figure out what the fuck that meant, hell even a quick look on YouTube will garner you with enough information to overload you. The boards become a 'wasteland' but only because the same shitty threads keep popping up day after day, which leads to older users getting pissed. Wow man, are you attacking me? I just merely said he should google his more simple questions, I wasn't trying to belittling him or anything else. Nor was I calling names/making fun of him or calling him retarded.
