High pass and low pass?

I'm confused about which is which. I've never used these before, and I want to figure it out. If I want to get rid of high frequencies, is that a low pass? And vice versa, or the other way around? Also, what plugins do you suggest for these filters?

yes you are correct
low pass cuts highs out
high pass cuts lows
easiest way to remember is
low pass- letting the lows pass through and vice versa
Abletons autofilter for sweeps
eq8 for cuts does it for me

I was confused when I started learning this too because I's hear high pass then low pass then high cut then low cut and I was like huh?? Then it came to me just like he said^^^^.
Low pass allows the lows to pass
High pass allows the highs to pass
The probelm is when you start to overthink it, especially if you're earing your veggies

! Don't! Lol!!!
! But, if you only want a high cut and no other cuts, why just use the auto filter? Then again the eq8 allows more future flexibilty.
Did you get ableton 9 yet? I love how they put a spectrum analyzer in the eq 8!!

Yes. Very handy especially for mixdows
Also about the autofilter, reason I stopped using it for cuts is because I find that you gotta mess with the Q otherwise it tends to boost on default.

would one of you guys be able to give a quick explanation of what you're talking about with auto filter? would be much appreciated. I feel I have yet to understand it's full potential

Autofilter is simply a 1 band eq. The 2 main features are that of any eq, frequency and q(bandwidth).
If tou still do jot understand, read the manual or check a youtube video.
If yoi do not understand the whole hi pass, low pass.... Clearly you do not understand eqs so bruch up chap

and if you cant make out what they do from listening, music production might not be your thing mate.
But yea, highpass/lowpass is very straightforward stuff really.

So many reasons this question isn't worth starting a thread over. Fucking google it. Wikipedia. FFS

All you did was explain what EQ is. I know what EQ is. There's a reason it's called "
Auto-filter" and not just "Filter". Then again, my question was posed to 123kid because I was asking how he uses it for cuts and sweeps. On occasion I have used the LFO feature to make some wobbles, but I feel like it has a lot more to offer than that. Again, I'm asking about the sweeps and cuts. Sorry if that wasn't clear in my initial question.

It was a little unclear... But!
Granted I'm not looking at it at the moment, but I'm almost positive it's called an "auto-filter" is because it is a filter and not an actual eq band like a notch. It was also created before live 9, which starts you with a high pass, 3 notches, ad a low pass, so they probably just created it as an easier way of opening up a filter without having 2-7 other bands in it's display. I believ the only features it has is that it had its own lfo and i believe it had an envelope too. I'm pretty sure the lfo only goes up to like 40% so the whole signal is not affected, it can create a DJs "gate" effect, similar to using auto pan with like 30% dry/wet.
Like I said, it makes sweeps easier so you don't touch any other eq bands and if you only need a low/high cut/pass then just toss Auto-Filter on instead of an eq 3 or 8. Use it on your sub! Sweep a pad with low pass! Sweep a lead with high pass!
I hope I answered your question this time or at least part of it

thanks. sorry if that came off kinda rude. I think it's called auto-filter cause some of its functions are automated. Maybe I should have posed it like this lol: how do you (personally) make a sweep with autofilter?

It's all good, without face to face communication, it's hard to tell someone's tone, but nah, nothing special other than what I mentioned earlier, It can be automapped to your midi controller, but that's another discusssion.
I'm staring at it now and there's nothing else to it other than the quantize beat function which makes the envelope/lfo become quantized to the beat. You hve to sweep the frequency youself for sweeps

but like I said, most eqs have filters and this is just a filter without the other eq bands. Don't think too much about it, and to spare yourself from bein yelled at by some of the other members,
***In ableton there is a Info View Box in the bottom left corner, if you don't see it, press the ? Key (while holding Shift of course

) if tou have rhis enabled an hover your mouse pointer over a say the Envelope Knob, it says what it's function is "Envelope Amount: this controls the extent to which the envelope affects the filter" I'm not trying to be a jerk with this tip, just trying to help you save time and frustration. Always happy to help
