As an avid listener to dubstep/grime/garage/trap/tearout/etc for the last 5 years, I've started to come to a conclusion about my experience with this music.

I'm the sort that listens to the Youngsta, Distance, GetDarker, and multiple rinse.fm/Sub.fm/rood.fm podcasts every week or two. I'll even listen to Mistajam and UKF/Circus stuff to 'switch it up.' One thing that I've noticed is that I've become bored with the scene in general. It's not the scene's fault per-se; it's like I've saturated myself too much with bass music, and am not enjoying myself nearly as much as I used to.

For example, the first time I heard SC Connection was on a Youngsta podcast last year with J:Kenzo. When it dropped, I freaked the f*** out, yelling into my living room, and startling my pets. But since then it's been rinsed 'too often,' and now it doesn't have that same effect on me at all.

I think that this culture of constantly-releasing-new-material-as-fast-as-possible has given me some form of A.D.D. Having all this access to constant tunes and mixes is actually having a detrimental effect on my overall enjoyment. It's rare for me to have those moments of sheer wonder and amazement at what's hitting my eardrums, which is what got me into this scene in the first place. I'm tempted to just go cold turkey on the scene for a while, and come back in 6 months to a year so that I can get that awe inspired feeling back.

What do you guys think? Am I alone here? Do any of you do anything special to hold onto that awe-inspired feeling?

tbh i experience the same thing, it has to be something really fresh and new to spark my interest. nothing can come close to the feeling when i first heard caspa & rusko fabriclive though.. i mean in todays standards its nothing too amazing but boy did it sound so stupid fresh!!

Listen to more than just what you do now man, uk bass isnt the only good music out there

You're right of course, but no other music gives me quite the same feeling. Maybe I just haven't looked hard enough for good stuff elsewhere.

Whenever I find myself feeling like this I usually do just "take a break" for a while, mix it up a bit with the music genres you listen to, if all you listen to is grimey underground dance music then after a while it's natural that you'll feel a bit burnt out on it. Give some of your albums from other genres a spin, or try checking out new artists in those genres or even look into genres you've never considered before. Maybe listen to your usual radio/podcast stuff a bit less often as well, as much as it can feel like it hurts to miss a show by your favourite DJ he's still gonna be there next week, probably spinning very similar tunes in a similar style, so it won't be the end of the world. Or you could go the other way and try out some radio shows from DJs you've never considered before, likelihood is that they'll have a very different way of playing to your usual listening habits so that can give you a fresh perspective on the music.

Alternately if all else fails then get a g of mandy and head down to the next good dubstep or grime night in your area, a night off your tits dancing to tunes being blasted from earth shaking soundsystems has always done wonders for me if ever my "faith" in this music has been failing!

Guy above makes a good point about switching up djs and podcasts you would listen to.. i know some of the big name guys sets do sound the same if you listen literally every week.

personally i feel like alot of the mystery about certain producers and tunes has gone. these days there is alot of online promotion and people ripping tracks then naming who made them within hours of it first being played. some people might appreciate that, but i think its important for underground music to be a bit shady and have people curious about who made it.. when its being promoted about like chart music it defo loses some of its charm for me..

Not at all, while I do like knowing exactly who produced what, it does reduce the mystery that has been prevalent in the scene forever.
