Alright, as I do on a daily basis, I listened to Underoath's Disambiguation. Now, while listening to Catch Myself Catching Myself, I noticed the drums sounded like they were panning during each fill. I highly doubt the drums were actually panned, but out of curiosity, how was it achieved? Like, might it be the shuffle of the drums, may the drums had been layered with multiple instances, while the other instances were lowered in volume and panned out every now and then?

I haven't listened to what you're talking about but why not just pan the drums?

They sound better when in the very center, if not panned off maybe 1 or 2 "cents"., at least to me.

No, no, no. There must be some way to make the drums sound like they are panning without actually panning hard. Like, an illusion.

i dont really know how you would get an illusion of something panning, moving from one speaker to the next, without actually doing it.

I mean maybe you would like more, the trick of delaying one side of the stereo signal on a track, this then means that one channel hits your ear before the other, giving the illusion of it coming from that side, but then its not louder in the channel than the other like when using the pan pots, it is usually a more subtle effect.

Of course though, you dont have to pan hard to get the effect, I never pan fully, thats silly haha, just pan a little bit, with maybe the stereo delay effect too.

With a real drum kit your going to have cymbals and toms on both sides of the stereo feild because of mic placement and the way that drum kits are set up. The only thing that will ever be centered are kick and snare.

And you really shouldn't be listening to anything past There only chasing safety.

if your volume is stronger in one side of the stereo field than the other, the effect will still be there whether it's a panning effect that is doing it or some "illusion". just pan it the regular way and turn down the amount if you don't want the effect to be very noticeable.

You can create the illusion of something being panned by relying on the Haas effect, which you actually explained a bit further down your post. It's a very interesting experiment and everybody should try it. It's also sometimes useful when mixing.

The only time I have heard drums being panned(in a sweeping motion) is during a drum fill by some kind of metal/punk band that being said please don't pan your drums you retard it just doesn't work in electronic music. And please for the sake of all that is holy no drum fills either. Now slightly panning your hats and other things besides the Kick and Snare is some thing you should think more of doing.

But most importantly.

Keep it simple. Keep it clean.
