Making the beat in your head

Do you guys make the beat in your head, and try to create what's in your head? or just play around with notes until something sounds cool, and move onto the next sound.
I never try to create what's in my head, i always just play around with sounds until something sounds cool. I was wondering how many of you actually improvise from your head? Is it something I should probably try to get into?

Play around.
Also, some off beats hits randomly placed can be a real plus. Get rid of the grid and place some claps or whatever

Well my dubstep beats have a kick on 1 and a snare on 3. Add extra hits for flavor. Hi hats are syncopated (unsyncopated?), off beat. Some crash cymbals, open hats and reverse hits. And that's my beats unless it's at a different bpm other than 140-150 and that's pretty much it for my beats

Having a controller (I use Maschine) can help a lot. I would never program my drums the same way I would play them out on the pads, which is how they would be in my head. Not being confined to a "grid" can really give your beats some more life.

I tap beats with my hands and fingers before replicating them by programming them in.

Isn't that the sign of being proficient at playing music? When you can translate whats in your head into reality?
I kinda do both..

Both! I often get a totally different but cool sound by trying to create something that's in my head but failing.

I was joking.
Nah, I mean I always have rhythms in my head or ways I want drums to sound. Its just knowing how to get those down.
What I find the most infuriating is when I think I have this AWESOME 140 beat but in reality its a completely different BPM and after ive mapped it down the amazing idea isn't amazing anymore; its some shite track at 123 BPM not even people on K would like.
I'm a firm believer in that the best creative moments come from a vibe in the moment opposed to a worked idea over time.

I used to get that until I started using 64th note triplets.
Where there's a will, there's a way.

I imagine how the sounds in my head would be created, or what the actual frequencies and their timings etc are. That helps to get what I want.
I also just mess about but I need something to start on though, which normally means using SOMETHING from my head. I can just play the keyboard, hit out some drums as a basic pattern to get started, though
