hey guys

I have learned in ableton 8 (now have 9) and have tried demos of FL, Logic, Reason but always found flaws in the use personally that bought me back to ableton.

I never tried cubase but it looks really interesting with a lot of cool features (split windows for mixer and the chords track system) that would be really useful...

I can get it on educational pricing so around £260ish, i was wondering if its a good switch or if it adds/looses a lot of stuff vs live?

I will still keep live, its just that i wont want to waste £260 on software i end up not using at all.

Basically I was wondering from users od both or just cubase, what the pros and cons are in the hope that it will help me make my decision!

Cubase is awesome. But if you already have Ableton and know it well, you won't gain much by getting another DAW. They're all pretty good, why waste the time learning software you don't need?

I think there's already scale and chord plugins in Ableton, plus a few third party plugins like Cthulhu that help with chord progressions.

i have cthuhlu and dont like it really.

cubase looks a little nicer for producing where as live has a lot of DJ and live focused stuff.

also ableton almost has to much in terms of instruments and stuff, after watching some cubase vids it looks good. Is it a world of difference to learn?

also if i buy it do i only get it for mac or pc? i run both

I think Cubase is great, it was the first DAW I learnt and i didn't find it hard. Although it takes a while to master everything it can do, which is a lot!

I'm not sure about Mac and PC, you'll need to ask them.

i did some research and can use the key with eaither which is cool.

Its basically a case of what do i loose and gain vs ableton to see if its worth it!

try Studio One it's pretty new but definitely the best daw i came across

Yeah Cubase is cool and sound great but I moved from Cubase to Ableton. Some things in Cubase can be very long winded to do very simple things but its great fro stuff like chopping up audio. Love the arrangement track aswel.

Ableton work flow I just found a better fit. Also Cubase looks so gray and dull, it makes me feel like Im working on a rainy gray winters day in a gray room, in a paper factory that only makes gray paper. I think the GUI is a bit better since I used it but yeah. Another thing to think about is the limited FXs slots on the channels.

I have to say though all the FXs and stuff you get with it sound amazing... you will never need any VSTs other than synth and instruments.

That's one feature I've not used, I've been meaning to try the arrangement track out.

Easy workaround for this - just route the track to an empty group track, then you have another 8 slots. The PDC on Cubase is spot on, you can route things all day and it all stays in time.

Someone mentioned Reaper over Cubase in the DAW thread and I'm not even thinking of buying Cubase 7 now because it doesn't look worth the cost with all the unnecessary extras. Depends on what you really want
