This mix is super dope and I'm very much looking forward to Kyle's album and future collabs w/ Funkineven (as well as anything from Funkineven as he is the nuts!) However, major mistake recording the mix to cassette as it killed the highs and sucked the air out of it. No one who actually remembers cassette would have done that. Ah folly of youth!

I'm pretty sure he knew exactly what he was doing.

Funny you say that, I've seen a few mixes recently that have been recorded on tape.

tbf we all want our mixes to sound a certain way, with selection and key to give the mix that sort of feel to it - well kyle's doing just that but in another way

You get tape saturation by tracking to 2" tape, like a Studer machine. Kinda different. Cassette is utter crap. There are some SUPERB tape saturation plugins if you want that effect (which is slight compression - you can also do it to taste). There's no need to defend everything the guy does because you like his tracks and mixes. Recording to cassette is daft. It's "Aren't I retro. I'm so cool." NO.

Right well I think there's a bit of a difference between "defending everything the guy does" and just saying "he's not an idiot like you think he is", right? In any case, he said "I recorded the mix to cassette because I felt like a lot of the music on the mix embodied the feelings of a time period when tape was the main format people used to listen" and not "I recorded this all to 2" tape [because 2" tape] was the main format that people used to listen", so he wanted it to sound really crunchy. Whatever though, you can always listen to him on NTS with Funkineven:

When you mine things from the past, you bring back those things that are worth bringing back. Kyle Hall knows this -- there are some extremely corny aspects to 70's funk he has judiciously left behind, as has Funkinenven, Metro, et. al. Technology is no different.
I think in addition to his musical talents Kyle Hall has considerable self-promotion talents -- which are necessary for success. He knew when doing an RA mix an interview goes along with that where they ask you about the mix, and what is there to say about a mix? So he gets clever and records the mix to cassette and talks about it in the interview so people will go "WHOAH!!!!!" It's marketing is all I'm saying.
Cheers for the link!
