Influence is inevitable.
You think of things to make things, and maybe somebody will think it’s new.
That’s just how it works.
What's more intriguing to me is the persons who influence you outside of the medium in which you find yourself. Not just limiting this to genres either. I owe more to filmmakers than I probably do to music producers in terms of influencing the music that I produce.

Yeah it is...
Don't really know where to go from there. Are we talking about our outside influences here or what?

Speaking of influence mate, you wouldn't happen to have been under it when you wrote this?
But yeah, I get what you mean. Sometimes I'll draw inspiration from a story or a character in a TV-show or something.

the whole phenomenon of genres comes from people being influenced by other people to make similar stuff.

I think my biggest influence is the fact that i suck at guitar. So i have to do something else if i want to record a piece of music haha.

I'm pretty boring when it comes to influences. Most of them are musical and probably quite tracable, but I don't think I would be making the music I'm making if it wasn't for the free-jazz and technical metal I was listening to when I was 16. Or would I be as in love with breaks if it wasn't with all the old ass hip-hop I listened to when I was 12?
My biggest influence is more of a feeling, though. I'm an emotion junkie. With my music, I really just want to create something that can excite me the way all that metal and jazz did back then. Like, make something that I think is just too crazy. From a production standpoint, my biggest influences are probably the DJ Producer and old SPL stuff, but they're not my biggest insprirations to do what I do. That goes back to just being the emotions junkie that I am.

It's a paradox. Or moreover, a never ending cycle. Taking influences and crafting them into your own work to give the finished product, which in essence isn't new but a byproduct of your interpretations.

= Anything new ever made ever

No but really it's interesting shit when you get down to it. Everything is built upon everything else. Once we were hairy dumb fucks scrabbling around in caves getting spiritual experiences off something catching on fire and even then our limited sense of abstraction and ego came from millenia of arguably unconscious behavioral mimicking which is exactly the same underlying shit as Wub was alluding to.
In short, it's impossible to create something 'new' or from somewhere totally isolated from some form of influence as everything is in some form a bastardization of something else. It's not a bad thing at all, heck, it's the one universal theme of progress of any kind.

imagery is a huge influence for me, i have a habit of putting sound to a picture in my head. it could be imagery from a movie scene or just looking at photography.

Reminds me of that one medieval king who took 2 kids (1 boy, 1 girl) from birth and isolated them from all human contact in one room for their entire lives, hoping that they would create a language between each other that he thought would be the "language of god". They both ended up becoming mentally retarded as a result of the isolation (they weren't born mentally retarded, proving that it could develop from environmental causes).

EDIT: btw how do you get the "[Insert DAW here] User" thing in your sig? Trying to get one for Ableton

Reading that made me feel fucked up. I don't know how true this is, but just imagine being in the same place as someone else like that, really LONGING to share things but not knowing how. /shudders

Yea. Electronic music (not counting hip hop) accounts for less than 10% of what I listen to and when I do listen to electronic music it's rarely dance/party/rave music. Philip K. Dick's science fiction and Rimbaud's poetry probably influences my music more than music. I really want to do something like American Prayer by Jim Morrison/the Doors, but haven't had the balls to start it let alone release it to the world.

My biggest influence is from what I'm drinking. Seriously. No jokes. Like Tea gives me a summer vibe, and I'll end up making something funky if im having some tea. Or if im having coffee i'll usually do something aggressive.

There is always the 'beautiful accident' in which one accidentally develops something new without any influence from prior developments.

at the end of the day, I'm more so influenced to open ableton, than I am influenced to create a particular piece/sound/arrangement...Inevitably, regardless of how something comes to fruition , it's plausible to draw conclusions based on the final product containing external influences.
I'm an extremely sensitive and emotional individual in the context of human relationships (on any given level). To focus on that dynamic and apply it to creation/producing, is constraining for me at the moment. I feel like eventually this will not be the case, and can be the source for influence.

well... postmodernism, in short, is a rejection of the modernist tendency to categorize the world. don't see how this really relates to that... care to explain?
Decently short definition of postmodernism for anyone interested:

Is this where you're coming from?
