Merks Dexter.
It's hard to compare though - Dexter (at least in the later seasons) is a bit, idk, soap opera with murders. Hannibal is a lot more psychology orientated - the killers mind, what motivates it etc. The show isn't perfect and there is a bit of soap opera tacked on for good measure but Mikkelsen really shines and there is more than enough going on to keep you interested.
It doesn't take any time at all to get going, so have a go with the first episode and if it doesn't float your boat then don't bother with the rest.

Well of course it's too early on to say anything about character development but the characters seem developed already, if that makes sense..
Let me know what you think but be warned - the violence is graphic.

might watch this, I liked Dexter but I found that once he had "developed" (i.e. he started to become genuinely emotionally attached to certain things) it just started going round in circles so stopped watching.

As much as I like the show this is my main gripe with it. They seem to tone it down a bit in later episodes but it has the potential to make the show shit if they dwell on that cheesyness.

Yeah he's some kind of autistic or some next disorder. The reliving the scene in his head is obviously dramatised for us but they explain it as an extreme excess of empathy - that's how he can 'see' what the killers did.
It's a bit daft but so far there's more than enough redeeming aspects to retain my interest.

but it seems lik he works out really specific things with that shit, almost like its magic or something, seems a bit sketchy

Dunno. I don't see it as too much of a stretch, tbh. It's not that far beyond what a good criminal profiler with a bit of forensic science knowledge could do. His excess of empathy just enables him to think like the killer/know what motivates them and so be able to come out with 'this is why xyz happened.'
Maybe you're right, but I haven't found myself thinking "OMD that's bait! How did he know that?".

Too bad Dexter will forever remain in dubstep history as it was sampled in Hunted.

lol
i mean that's cool, the first 2 seasons have been great, lots of fresh ideas and interesting characters, but then after 3 seasons it all went into an endless loop
