I cant work in odd numbers...

*sigh*

My mixes will be a lot better if i can bring myself to not care about the numbers. But i cant ignore them. Weird add/ocd/bbq/something is keeping me from just setting the levels to where they need to be. Instead i pull a Mr. Monk (seriously, watch that show) and have to have things end in 1 or .5.

Trolls are welcome to this thread :t:

Best thing I did to get over numbers/exact numbers is to mix some of my projects on a real mixing board.

I don't even know what my numbers are, I just mix it until it sounds good with the drums and subs being the loudest peaks, making sure to leave -12db to -3db of headroom.

Can you fool yourself by changing the scale of each fader so that it will look like it's ending in 1 or 5 in that scale?

Weirdly I used to do this, like set stuff to -5.5, -10.0 etc. and be all "yeah that'll be fine". Now I don't even look at the numbers when doing a proper mix down - I just listen and play with the faders.

I thought, I was the only one with this problem.

I'm still not entirely over it, but I just figured that nothing is perfect, and my pursuit of that mythical perfection, is completely futile.

Now I see the imperfection in everything, and I just laugh and embrace it.

For instance, I see a girl with those half dimple like Robin Tunney, and I can't seem to not find it attractive. I hear a messy Skrillex growl bass thing -- that's completely inharmonic -- and I find it amazing. I just see the beauty in imperfection, I guess.

Even so, I still find Juke music to be utter shit -- just saying.

Hard as in you dont have hundreds of channels and sends or because you need audio outs on your interface and a mixing board?

Also, if you had a look around you could probably find some place to take your stems, pay for some studio time with which I'm sure you'd get an engineer. Sit with them and work on the mix. I'm sure you'd gain a lot of useful knowledge that way. Just be upfront about what you know and what you don't when you are working.

totally general statement...but I love how people around here piss away a hundred bucks here and there buying more and more software that's in all likelyhood getting them further away from there goals instead of saving it and spending it on something that might actually teach them something or get them thinking outside their normal mindset.

FWIW I'm a terrible gearwhore, but once I started investing in something besides yet another VST I actually started to learn something.

EDIT: Also, if you didn't live on the other side of the country I'd invite you over to try mixing on my modest setup :w:

really don't get the obsession with looking at the numbers of the different tracks, just mix until it sounds good with enough headroom left

you could always set the faders to an even number and then put a gain tool on the channel to set to volume to where it actually needs to be :P

I was just reminded of that episode Monk, where Adrian painted those hideously awkward, yet clinically precise paintings.

I would provide a link, but I belive it's Googleable ;D
