So.... Skream's New Musical Path..

Hows it going for him? We all know he's left dubstep behind but has anyone purposely gone to see him since his change of focus or has anyone stumbled across somewhere he's been playing?
I have no idea personally. Being stateside hasn't really helped but even then I don't recall the last time I seen the guy.. His Skreamizm tour was a success right? I have no idea the only thing I have seen recently was his Boiler Room giveaway in Texas...
I dunno i personally don't have a lot of love for his DJ style, (vicious spins backs on cdjs come to mind) but whats his selection these days? Disco? House? 'Deep-House'? Its really strange seeing him posting shit about how hes Djing with like Jamie Jones and Eats Everything...
Then there poor ol' Benga.. Looks like he's just been cast aside, heard he played some good shit at Parklife Fest tho but i never asked for details.. Are people still booking him thinking he is the 'King of Dubstep'? That would be embarrassing I guess when he turned up after weeks of promotion and he threw down Disco. I mean I find it hard to believe his demand is still there if that's what hes playing. Thats not exactly where he made his name is it but at the same time apart from DJing has he really made any releases worth taking note of that followed his new path?
I find it all a bit intriguing

Well, a couple months ago I saw skream play out, at something that couldn't typify this shift more. A mate of mine was playing at this big red bull disclosure album launch night, and I got a phonecall the night of it asking if I fancied it. Me and a mate went down expecting not particularly great things (apart from my mate b2b leon vynehall).
Long story short, pleasantly surprised! Skream b2b disclosure was the big super secret headline slot, and compared to the live disclosure set (lol) it was amazing. I think its fair to say expect a whole heap of this recent, jacking dungeon sounding techy house stuff, the odd classic (blue mondays and deep burnt got played) and a bit of (overly cheesy for me) vocal disco. Crowd was way better than I expected as well, after turning up to find we were easily in the top 1% age bracket, and seeing women checking their immaculate make up on the dancefloor for all the topless muscled up guys we didnt have much hope, but by 2/3am it was a mega loved up crowd minding their own business with smiles a plenty. I gave some marks to the next generation that night!
...but disclosure boys...you dont mix out of deep burnt after like 3 mins. They just didnt get it lol
*play boring tune*
*finish boring tune*
"Hey guys! I hope youre having a good time WOOOO! This next one off our upcoming album! Woooooooo!"
*Facepalm*
*Another boring tune*

I saw him at his skreamizm event at WHP a few months back
Really, really bland set, and WHP must have only been half full. was a bit weird really.

man can do what he wants.
people can take it or leave it
good on him for needing to spread his musical wings
he has always had aspects of that
you shouldnt be held hostage by your past
(though i saw him play a disco set in like 2010 i think it were)
i found once i'd almost given up on dubstep i started enjoying it again personally
you'd have to be dumb to completely dismiss a genre
it's all music at the end of the day
too many people hung up on defining styles imo
and only wanting to listen to one thing til they're sick of it
just play or dance to the music that moves you?

Like donga said skream has been playing house and disco for awhile now but just not that often. I'm not sure if him playing it more makes it a totally new thing. I wouldn't try to make this a bigger thing than it really is by analyzing the situation.

The most surprising thing for me is that somebody so heavily involved in something new and ground-breaking would WANT to shift so heavily onto a path so well-trodden.

not into house then?
dubstep is just as 'dated'

No, I'm well into house as much as the next man here.
And dubstep being dated has nothing to do with what I said. Not sure you've understood my point really.
I'm just surprised that a man who took a pivotal role in progressing garage/early dubstep into what it became chose house/disco to go into when he got bored of dubstep, and not something
new.
Before anyone accuses me, I'm not knocking his decision, entirely up to him, surprises me, is all.

yeah i think my response was a bit confused. apologies for that
however one thought is that if you've been immersed in a sound for a long time that any other style could be appealing as it's something fresh for you to explore potential within
perhaps some people like house because it's not really new
but a fundamental part of dance music's dna that you can go back to when it feels right
like i dont particularly expect or demand dubstep be particularly innovatinve anymore
if i find a new dubstep 12 that i'm feelin i'm happy to support
whether breaking new ground or just being a great example of that area of music

Yeah, those are good points man. We'll never know unless the man himself clears things up! Maybe I just expect pioneers to want to be pioneers forever, but I guess he's settled on something that's new to him, not necessarily something that's new to everyone else.

You mean a new genre or a new sound? Did you expect him to pull off a Pritchard?

Not EXPECT, just try maybe, I dunno, like, yeah, a new genre, or at least take house/disco in a truly new direction.

Sorry about that expect word haha I kind of know what you're about, there's a difference between guys like Autechre Bowie Prince Stevie Moore who made some innovations in almost every field they dabbled in and Skream who plays it pretty safe now

alot of the time electronic heads get into disco is because of the phrasing, its like the link between concerthall and dancefloor, and that era is such a great joining of elctronic/accoustic, digital/analog, and proper arrangement shit, which is well worth studying- nile rogers? quincy? sometimes you have to go back to go forward. as for deep burnt that shit needs to be deaded. if senor coconut is on this board, he should make a 15min batucada samba version of it.
