Honestly? Will all this pay off?

but if someone came up to you and said "i'm from the future, noone will ever appreciate your music other than a small selection of people on soundcloud who only compliment it on the hope that you'll reciprocate and listen to theirs"- would that matter to you? would you be able to keep making music with the same enthusiasm?

Nope, I'm content with what I get from music at the moment. I have fun making stuff and I've made some friends through music so it's better than any other hobby I've had.

I think if you want to make it you have to lose all self respect to do all the networking and promotion you need to do to achieve success, especially if you are making the same tunes as everyone else

If they told me now, that would make no difference. I have put too much into this now, and have lost too much over it now that I couldn't bring myself to stop. If they told me like 10 years ago to never start, and nothing would ever come of it I would of never started, and probably have a much better life now for doing so. A decent career, better relationships, better mentally, and happier.

I personally believe that if you keep putting in enough effort, you will eventually "make it".

There are several other factors, including natural talent. But I think someone with zero natural talent can still "make it" if they put in enough work.

Another factor is your willingness to modify your sound to please the masses. If you continually jump from one flavor of the week to the next, I think you will, generally speaking, "make it" quicker than someone who sticks to one type of sound. For instance if you jumped on the trap bandwagon real early, it's much more likely that someone will come across your song on youtube when there were only a few edmtrap songs on youtube than it is now that youtube is saturated with shitty edmtrap.

I hope to one day reach that relatively small "original dubstep" market. It's relatively small in America, anyway. Thinking about moving to London after college.... I would never start making house or brostep music just to advance my career. Maybe a tune here and there, but I would never completely change my sound.

I don't necessarily think you have to sacrifice self-respect to promote your music or network. I think of it this way, you're creating a product that is valuable to people, but they're not going to find it on their own. A lot of people are never going to hear some great music that they will really enjoy listening to if you don't put in the work to bring it to them. Now of course if you sell out and completely lose touch with your own creativity in the process then sure, you've lost self-respect, but I think it's possible to achieve success and still stay true to your sound.

I already have made it because I really enjoy myself, enjoy chatting music with ya'll and I I keep getting better and making tunes I'm proud to share with people even though I've got a long way to go. And I've got a load of projects on the back burner.

Only thing killing me is the damn gear lust...

Im not going to get money and women from making music. And I dont want money and women. I just want to make tunes and get better at making tunes. im sure eventually ill get a few releases but nothing too serious. Basically what fragments said is perfect.

No. Not from my own stuff anyway. I'd love to actually work in a studio recording live audio. I don't have any interest in going to a club to see or play live music or a dj. I'm more more into the mixing and production side of things.

Ya, although 'making it' is pretty subjective. Enter a beatport remix competition and sift through 65 pages of pure shit and keep your hopes alive. Honestly all you need is to get your foot in the door and you can maintain yourself because there will always be someone loving your tunes. Look at some of these brostep guys, datsik, excision, zeds dead, dodge & fuski, skrillex even. Literally all of the current stuff sounds like complete shit (compared to what 'broke them out') yet they're maintaining careers. I randomly listened to Datsik's Cold Blooded EP the other day and didn't make it through 2mins of any song on the EP. Yet the guy has a packed schedule of shows. Make 1 banger somehow someway, and get it to blow up.. you'll be set

I figure it'll either help me confirm what I've been doing is good or give me new ideas. I wouldn't look at either of these as bad thing.

Problem is it's one of those "closed" programs where you can't just pick and choose classes and you have to be in the program to take them. I talked to the director before about auditing (no grade, can't get degree) the classes. He didn't seem stoked.

With time and practice, anyone can. However I think that establishing your own sound is very important. For example, as far as making a career out of producing/djing goes, I could careless. What I want out of producing is to making music that I can enjoy.

but being able to play a big festival show now and then and travel around weekly is certainly eyecandy for me. But I know this would be very unlikely to happen unless I make beatport top 20s style tunes.
EDIT: And that really pisses me off to think about that.
