What do I need for acoustic treatment?
Which size monitors would be best for the room?
How much will it all cost me?

For serious acoustic treatment, I'd recommend GIK Acoustics.

I got a bulk pack of panels from a foam company on eBay, does the job nicely.

Check this diagram out mate, shows exactly where to place your treatment.
A couple off things to note when buying acoustic treatment. You get what you pay for. Buy from reliable companies, i got a package of 24 titles off a company called Universal Acoustics managed to get it off ebay for £100, i have seen un-branded foam on ebay for a little as £2 a tile, so be careful in that respect.
When placing the foam on the walls either side of your monitors sit in you're listening sweet spot and get someone to go along the walls with a small mirror, as soon as you can see the monitor cone out the corner of your eye in the mirror that should be the point where you place your treatment as that is the first reflection spot.
Acoustic treatment is necessary as it tames you're mixing environment so that the sound that you are hearing is true and not coloured in anyway. However in saying that you will never make a room completely true, unless its being built solely for that purpose. Have a read through this articale -

The size of your monitors depends on the size of your room, if its a small/average room a pair of monitors with a 5inch cone would be you're best bet, for a larger room maybe 8inch.
Hope that helps mate!
