Pre Amps/Interface/Ins & Outs

Ez guys, just a quick question. Do you need pre-amps for recording say an outboard sampler or compressors signal back into a D.A.W? My understanding is that the Interface sends the output to the sampler vis a TLRs/1.4 jack cable, then processes the sound on the sampler and sends it back into the interface via a TRS/1.4 jack connection on the back (input) rather than using a pre-amp? I'm pretty sure that pre-amps are just used for microphone to boost the signal. Just need it clearing up.

Cheers in advance!

Yes, you're talking about line level signal. http://recordmixandmaster.com/2010-02-m ... difference

most samplers work at instrument-level, using TS cables, so yes, you need a preamp/DI. most usb boxes come w/ preamps in them... how good they depends on how much you're spending.

compressors and most studio gear are (usually) line level.
