Ableton latency issue

On Ableton 9, always get this where if I click the piano roll to trigger the sample, there is always a delay of around a second or slightly less between me hitting the key and the sample playing.
On Logic 9 this doesnt happen, however it could be a sound card issue I guess because on youtube on my mac there is normally a delay between me hitting play on the video and the sound rushing to catch up.
Ideas?

Thanks

Have you............. adjusted your latency settings?

Yeah it will most likely be latency/buffer settings.

There is always a little delay (it's just when set right it won't be noticeable) this is to give the DAW a little room to work and less likely to create errors. A good analogy I read was to look at the buffer as a bucket. The audio (water) comes down and fills the bucket before it tips it down. The bigger the bucket, the more audio it can process (this is good for projects that use a lot of resources) however it also increases the time it takes to tip which will introduce delay. If you use a smaller bucket then it will tip the water faster giving you less delay, however if there is too much water coming in for it to handle then it will run over the sides (crash)

Analogy aside:-

If you need less delay and aren't using much processing then use a smaller buffer
If you need to use more plugins, tracks etc then use a larger buffer (at the cost of delay being added)

in the audio preferences, check your driver error compensation, and delay compensation, and adjust the buffering.

Ive had similar issues, these usually get it back on track
