I have been mixing dnb for years. All I have on vinyl is dnb that is usually produced in the 170bpm range give or take 5-10bpm.

This week I got a chance to use my buddy's Serato box. It was the first time I attempted to mix dubstep with trap and electro. First time mixing any of these genres at all really; outside of the dubstep breakdowns from dnb tracks. I found that the differences in tempo in some of the tracks made them impossible to beat match. Not only that, the songs are so short that you have to get that next record in quick or the record runs out. It was a humbling experience. Sometimes I would have one record pitched down so far it wouldn't even sound right.

Whats the trick? Is it not possible to freestyle a set without knowing the bpms of all your tracks ahead of time? Is this the allure of the dreaded sync function?

With dnb I can pretty much go through my whole box and not have any problems. Any tips would be very helpful. Thanks

If you're using serato doesn't it tell you the bpm like it does in traktor? When I mix trap I either get something close bpm wise or if I need to make a massive jump just wait for a breakdown where the drums cut out (if it has one) or just play it from the edge.

yeah i dont understand your problem.. short tunes? well mix longer tunes then, sorted!

also the bpm thing i think a lot of dubstep and trap is round the 140 mark, except for some trap tunes which are up to 160 bpm. and yeah, serato calculates the bpms of every track i've had no problem mixing tunes i've never even heard before and make out a coherent mix.. it's not rocket science dude sounds a bit confusing if you've played vinyl for some time and now having troubles with digital

Well, you already know that you can't mix things together that vary so greatly in bpm. Solution? Wait until you have any break that doesn't have drums to mix In something at a different tempo. It's really not that hard.

Don't get all uptight. Trvp is kind of funny and I thought it was typo but I see that people are really writing it like that. You might as well write tr5p as the Roman numeral v correlates with a 5 and not an a. But I guess you think it's vll vbstrvct with v v.

Peeps did give you advice. Nevalo said to group your tunes together by BPM and Outbound said to mix in things of a different BPM when there aren't any drums. I guess you haven't thought about tempos very much if you have only dj'ed Drum & Bass, but you really do have to know your tunes and their tempo beforehand. You cannot do blends with tunes that have a large BPM difference but you can drop them on the one at the end of a musical phrase. This is one of several techniques that can be used.

As far as my comment on electro, with your trvp spelling, I usually call out people on that one. I think it's as bad as people calling dubstep dub. It's another one of those appropriated genre names of a genre that has existed for 30 some years just like dub. It's time to learn some roots.
