Why is Coki in bro and not just early and tearout?

Garage. Horsepower? Dj Ez? Dj Q?
Grime. Spooky? Preditah?

I guess you could have 808Trap stuff as Hudson Mowhawk/Lunice/ TNGHT / Rustie/ Baauer/ Araabmusik(?)

Intrumental hiphop like Clams Casino and Flying Lotus?

Cool Idea, but you should change thread's name to "Newbies Introduction to subgenres" or something similar.
Also, couple youtube links (links, not videos tho) for each artist?

I'm only aiming for catergories/genres right now and using a few examples to get people thinking in the right directoin, I'll have a big name all the artists thread in the next iteration.

The 3rd thread will be the final all formatted nicely.

Fair enough.

Racking my brains for more genres

I don't think this is gonna be too successful. the main problem can be simply demonstrated when looking at house: carl craig? l.i.e.s? theo parrish? swedish house mafia? boddika? deep dish? what's house and what's not?
same goes for dnb and every other genre. is netsky pop?

It not like it hes limited to sub genres? I wouldnt place Jamie Jones next to Theo Parish but yeah they both play house, diffrent types though.

Categorising all artists is not the aim, not even within the genres we do like, only to give a guide to newbies of the sound to other artists they may like. Doesn't have to be exhaustive, and the chances of someone coming this forum out of all the alternatives looking for Netsky or SHM is pretty slim. :W:

maybe discern between the sub genres?

like swedish house mafia is electro house, l.i.e.s. is micro and deep house, boddika is uk funky? but then uk funky can also be garage and dubstep, shit

you're right, this may not work

lies have also released some ghetto tech & nyg though. so it gets tricky even on the most basic level. if someone's into house after listening to 3 chairs, recommendations like bod or dusky or beneath or dark sky just won't cut it. and I doubt a newbie will be able to tell the difference in genres. I get where you're coming from, pete, but I just don't think all the effort would be worth the outcome. diffrent story if you focus on purely dubstep, since there are more or less 200 guys that are noteworthy. and it wouldn't be too much trouble listing them and maybe give a starting point for the affiliated genres as you already did (juke, jungle [om unit? really?] asf).

Yeah definitive categorisation is never possible, because genres are flexible as are producers. but if we suggest the 10-20 top artists known for a genre with a couple of youtube / soundcloud clips to guide newbies then we're on the right track and they can take it from there.

The exercise is not to create ' COKI IS CLASSED AS EARLY DUBSTEP YOU FUCKING NOOB' style bible, only to give people some names and links to search if they like that 'breaky old dubstep sound that my mate played at a house party'.

The problem with doing only dubstep, is simply dubstep isn't the in thing, the majority of us on this very forum listen to other dance musics primarily, so having related genres and suggestions is a must. We can also add 'if you like xxx genre you might also like yyy genre'. And artists don't have to be pigeonholed into just one as per the Coki example above.

if someone were to come to the forum and say, 'Da faTT3st beA7s R BI AVICII <>, WH0 ELS3?!' then I'm happy for you all to tell them to do one.

I hate to be "that guy", but I just don't see the point. the people that have been here for a couple of months/years already know their shit and know where to find new stuff, including where to find new music on this board (snh e.g.).

new fellas don't come on here to search for techno. they register because it's called Dubstep Forum for a reason.
don't get me wrong (still a class tune btw). I admire that you'd be willing to sacrifice your energy and time to help those guys out. I just don't think that anybody on here would be able to create a decent "starter's list" that people couldn't simply find on wikipedia.

to stick to my earlier example; if somebody wanted to dig deep into the classic house stuff, you'd be better off to direct them to their nearest record store. discovering music is an activity. not a "passivity". get me

what with genrecrossing tunes/artists?

edit; I could give a lot of artist names who are all "OG"'s in their respective "genre" so this can be a long list. What's the point of doing this if I may ask? What do you want to do with this?
