Somewhat clean but flavorful source of gain...

Hey production peoples.

I'm trying to set a high watermark for stupid threads here in dsf/p and I hope you all can help me achieve that goal.

One of my old favorite mixing/sound design techniques was rather than turning the gain up on something, using a device to increase the gain. A device like a distortion or overdrive, or compressor, or saturator, or just something other than just pure digital gain. This techniques imparts just a bit of flavor and liveliness (to each or many sounds) that would otherwise be lacking, or could be applied later in one thick syrupy blanket over the whole mix... and prob sound kind of unnatural.

But my question is... what devices did I used to use to do this? I'm literally, like, totally stumped on what I used to use. I know this is the equivalent of forgetting your name. I know this. But that is the situation. Help a mentally deficient old codger out and manifest your god given sense of charity and grace.

Most certainly not what I used to use... I do have a tube preamp sitting rightcha here. Strangely enough this PARTICULAR problem was solved by Kombinant, compression at max to shape, and a color filter before killing almost all the highs.

But still. If anyone has access to my earlier memories, I'd appreciate knowing what I used to use.

FMC Really Nice Leveling Amp or Really Nice Compressor. I like to run things through my JoeMeekMC2 and use the gain to just turn things up, no compression.

Or just go buy a Distressor and be done with it.

I'm building a virtual studio (like the original virtual studio - the one in your mind) and I've got RLA's and RNC's on several channels of my 16 track mixer.

Had a couple, but I moded them. I threw a cat gut thong (bye bye Mr. Speckles and Flash) on each and wear them like geta.
