struggling to deconstruct this.

help much appreciated

how do you mean deconstruct?

just go on youtube and type in 'grime bass tutorial' and youll find tons of stuff.

im not looking for instructions on how to distort an 808. my question refers directly to the link i posted.

there are 5 bass sounds there closely related and i'm trying to recreate them as accurately as possible to improve my sound design skills. i was having difficulty that's why i asked for help

well if you know how to make grime bass then what's the problem? I would approach this one of two ways:

1) get a good kick sample. use it as a layer. then get a synth like massive or sylenth and take squares or saws and distort or other weird WTs in massive and distort them. add portamento and an envelope on pitch as you said.

2) synth the whole thing. I made a sylenth patch for a kick that sounds surprisingly realistic. this is not a distorted kick drum, it's just a regular kick. it's not too difficult. my patch goes like this:

- sine wave, 2 voices, pitched down 2 octaves so I don't can play notes in the C2-F3 range. wouldn't go above F3 otherwise it will sound weird. you can adjust the voices to you're liking.
- amp envelope - no attack or sustain, decay at about 60% and release at like 35-40%
- lowpass filter. you don't necessarily need this, but you might want it especially if you distort or do anything that brings out harmonics.
- high shelf boost to bring out the highs at like 500-600.
- pitch envelope at about +15% - leave A, S, & R at 0, and bring decay up about 20% of the way. adjust the decay to you're liking. that's the really important part.

Then what you're going to want to do is add distortion or filter drive or something to give it those harmonics you're looking for, and you could also layer a square or a saw to give it even more harmonics. Add voices and detunage to the square/saw if you want. You could even add an LFO to the distortion amount. That sounds pretty cool. Maybe on volume too.



For that exact sound, I would recommend using the above process but with one of the WTs in massive. It sounds pretty synthetic/digital. Not exactly sure which one though. Give it a go!

Sounds like its made in massive
carbon with env on the wavetable and amp for the high layer
+ lp filter
anything would work the for bottom

super hard clipping then bouncing down bass from 808 emulators sounds sick for these type of sounds;)

Grime isn't gonna have nearly as much on YouTube as say "dubstep"

I'm still struggling with this sound, have been for a while now...

I'm not after the distorted 808 pulse x sound, it's more the detuned square eskimo bass...

there's definitely a lot of stuff on youtube... but tutorials on eski, grime,... sounds: that's sparse...
I don't think I found any good ones so far!

Imo youtube tutorials are shit and half the time its stuff reiterated over and over by other channels. I have maybe 3 channels i follow for constant content thats good but if you're looking for particular sounds, then you're out of luck.90% of tuts are this with some shitty massive patch with a present in the description ---> HOWZ 2 DOO THE SKRILLZ NOSIA KILL NOSIE KOAN SOUND DEATH FULL MEGA EPIC BASS TUTORIAL,

There are gems hidden, but it takes awhile to type certain phrase that pertain to the type of videos you want and when its upload. The more recent tutorial videos in maybe the past year are good quality but every now and then look up stuff thats was upload that week or month ago.

Youtube is a great source of info dont get me wrong, i have a folder with maybe 600 video links to tutorials but has taken me a good year and every weekend to find the most recent and actual quality stuff.

Im going to start up my own channel soon with quality tutorials on key subjects most producers arent learning or concentrating on.

yeah, the only good tutorial i've bothered to watch in the past.. i dunno... 9 months-ish, is distance's tutorials. they were pretty solid.

youtube tuts are mainly good for ppl who are just starting out and need to learn how to use their daw/vst imo. or for bros trying to make growls

but really i blame youtube's system. it's the same thing with trying to find new music on youtube. their algorithms are shitty as fuck. no matter what tutorial you're looking at, they always show you "epic growls" tutorials and shit like that, and on deep dubstep videos they always have "10 sickest dubstep drops" mixes in the recommended section.
