How Do You Lay Out Your Drum Pads?

What it says on the tin. Show me your pad layouts.

For Superior Drummer, I've got a kit laid out like this:

Code: Select all

[HH Choke ] [HH Open ] [Cymb L ] [Cymb R ]

[HH 1 ] [HH 2 ] [HH 3 ] [Ride ]

[Snare ] [Sidestick] [Snr Roll ] [Tom 1 ]

[Kick 1 ] [Kick 2 ] [Flr Tom 1] [Flr Tom 2]
I can play Kick 2 and the three closed Hihats with my right hand, while playing ghost kicks and snares with my left. It's pretty easy to reach over to the ride or tap the crash cymbals with two fingers. The open hat gets muted by the choke or any of the closed hats so it's pretty easy to get good sounding hats parts with one hand. I can pretty much hold down a whole beat with one hand just using the second column if I have to.

It's not as easy to figure out if I'm not using a traditional drum kit setup. I'll usually put kicks and snares in the same spot and then try to arrange the other percussion according to what their closest analogue on a real kit would be.

I just drag drums from the browser (Ableton user here man) and lay them out (1 track per drum). I dunno why I don't use Impulse or a Rack or whatever, but it's just how I do it.

I guess I should clarify I'm talking about laying out drums over a pad controller like an MPD, MPK, Maschine, etc. Not arranging them in software.
Trying to find the optimal finger drumming layout in terms of ergonomics.

Nwj coming in with his tony robbins ass and not even participating in the thread...

I don't use a physical drum pad, i use Groove Agent One in Cubase 5. I normally have this layout on the pads.

Code: Select all

[Perc 1] [Perc 2 ] [Cymbal 1] [Cymbal 2]

[HH 1 Closed] [HH 2 Closed] [HH 3 Open] [HH 4 Open]

[Snare 1] [Snare 2] [Snare 3] [Snare 4]

[Kick 1 ] [Kick 2] [Kick 3] [Kick 4]

Bottom left, kick 95% of the time. To the right, hh, to the right, snare. Boom Bap layout. The rest is variable.
