Which ever software you decide on there will be a wealth of hints and tips for it on the internet (you tube - forums)

- If you have any mates who produce then aks them if they can teach you the basics.

It really is a case of trial and error - practice , perseverance etc...
Finding your sound as well as learning the technical stuff

One that will let you hit the ground running is learning the basic science behind sound.

never loose sight of the end musical product or your own creativity
there is a really good official Reason tutorial that goes over the fundamentals of getting started , song structure etc... It can be applied to FL etc....
by science i mean

Understand Frequency range.
natural vibrations of sound waves - how these are recorded by microphones
how sound translates digitally and how this signal vibrates your speaker cones.

Also spend time looking at wave forms - what they look like and how they sound. A pure sine wave is a good place to start - then then Triangle, Saw and Square waves -

But this will all come with time and practice. First and foremost is the music.

Wikipedia is great for this info.

Yer mate, download the fruity demo and start clicking buttons, fking around, and you should get the hang of it. It'll take you a while of messing around but with practice you will start to be able to turn your ideas of how you want something to sound, into a song. Which is the goal when learning a DAW or any instrument i think.

Get cracking, RIGHT NOW!! :!:

don't listen to this... fruity loops is ridiculously sick.. its all about how much TLC you put into your beats

start with cubase.... even i dont use cubase... if you use cubase youll understand other programs like fruity and logic better.... its more similiar to it. if you start fruity, youll start with a not so rly good program that would be a pitty if you get stuck to that. try to begin good. work harder to understand it then understand it faster but without a better result

Start on fruity loops pal - learn the main things about music production here (loops, structure, vst's, midi and sampling) Its all simple Fl and easy to use.

Once you got the hang of making beats, open your wings and dabble with other programs, until you find one that suites you!

Agree with Cryptic

over the last 8 yrs I've gone through cubase to logic to reaosn to live
as you get into it and discover your own way of working you'll find what suits, usability of the interface, feature sets etc

until recently ive been making 120-160 bpm world fusion music and its been heavily loop-based so live was the biznizz

i'm coming out from the loops and getting more into synthessis now so need to expand into something else (probably with live)

i've seen a lot of people rate Renoise recently but ive been on the webiste and thought wtf is this interface about!

start with a program thats got the basics and you can expand into (ie dont get a really cheap sequencer then reach its full potential in 3 months and need another one!)

they all have thier strengths and weekness imo. if your looking for ease of use and short learning curve the choice should be between fruity and reason, id recomend reason for one reason, it works most like the majority of other sequenceres out there as long as you think of the reason instruments like vstis, if you end up wanting to change to a more in depth audio in/ vst capable daw you will have learned how a "traditional" sequencer works, where as fruity has its own unique way of building songs, it has you make shorter patterns then use the playlist to sequence out these patterns to consturct a tune it works and is easy but its pretty different way of working compared to most programs.

why would you recommend fruityloops over logic or cubase? if you're serious about production you'll have to move to one of those eventually anyway.

Yes i agree you do wanna move on to these bigger packages, but not straight away unless you got someone there to teach you it.

Out of interest (I don't use Floops, but I know people who do) what does it lack that you need to 'get serious'?

only thing fl lacks is support from people. its got a bad reputation but its a great program. people that think its shit have probably only ever used the old ones from when it was still called fruity loops. fl studio 6 and 7 are great. most of the people in the know about production i have spoken to say its under rated
