I'm calling it that cause I'm not sure what this type of VST would be called, but I'm looking for an audio effect VST that replicates the sound of duplicating a track in ableton and hard panning left/right, preferably with the option to modify how extreme the effect is. I have sonalksis stereo tools but it does not give off the same effect and I'd like to save CPU, any suggestions?

Hard panning two copies of an identical sound doesn't do anything. 100% left + 100% right = 100% center (assuming pan laws, etc)

Regardless, you don't have to duplicate a whole track to have parallel effects. That's what effect racks are for.

Yes it really does, try it yourself. I'm pretty sure hard panning left and right does not make it mono.

Of course, I've been wrong before, and I'm the one asking the question. But it most definitely sounds wider to me.

Just tried it. Sounds identical just as I expected.

Think about what panning is. Hard panned left means "only play this in the left channel." Hard panned right means "only play this in the right channel." Combine the two and you get "play this in both channels."

whats a good vst so i can get a sounds to play only on the very left and right but not in the center? sdno what theyre ca,lled tbh. stereo splitter? idk.

Likely looking for a m/s processor. Many better fx have this ability built in. It allows you to treat the Middle audio or the Side audio separately. Can pull bass out of the sides, pull treble out of the middle on an eq. Can compress the center, leave the sides dynamic. Can just drop the volume on the center, or the sides. Powerful stuff broknocker.

It doesn't. Your confusing it with duplicating the actual synth and panning one left and one right. If you put the exact same signal left and right, you get the exact same thing in mono. Stereo content is exactly the difference between the left and the right channel.

So many posts, so few actual answers as to what vst's do this.

It seems like that Sonalksis tool does everything these do, and possibly more, so I don't see why you wouldn't be able to get the same effect using that.

PanCake (by Cableguys) is a good panning tool that I use from time to time, you can sculpt the automation path the audio will be panned to and there's a lot of opportunities to fuck around and make something crazy :3 and it's free!
