Thought about Buzz, but that's a tracker not a DAW.

Podium free is probably the best DAW out now, Studio One Free doesn't look bad, haven't tried it though.

Podium - http://zynewave.com/podium-free/
Studio One - http://www.presonus.com/products/Studio ... ree-go-pro

What are the limitation on Studio One vs. the paid version? And has anyone used Podium?

Studio One Free limitations as far as I know are:
lack of vst support
one Midi in/out
No sidechain
No multi out Instruments .
I've have used Podium free for a while, not as my primary DAW though.

+1 if you can handle the 4 track limit.

No wanting to split hairs, but that's not free;
I thought Ardour was free software

Ardour is free in the sense that you are free to do anything with it that you want (including use it on as many machines as you wish, make copies of it for friends and so forth). Some people like to explain this with the phrase "free as in free speech, not free as in free beer".
Jokers :lol:

Yes, it is. Look a bit more carefully, please. The source code is freely available. They charge for precompiled binaries for those too dim to compile their crap. Perhaps not the most ethical (or typical to open source software) practice, charging the 'stupid' but giving it out for free to the rest, but it is what they've decided to do.

Ardour is free. Precompiled binaries cost money, but the source is freely available. I compiled it and have it running flawlessly. The compile process is not difficult either. Full version obtained legitimately without paying a cent.

Furthermore, "free" versions of paid daws are, in my opinion, not free at all. They are demos and nothing more. I feel it much more appropriate that you call out Podium Free for not being free, rather than Ardour.

Thirdly, how is Buzz not a DAW? Let's take a moment to recognize what exactly a DAW is… a Digital…Audio…Workstation… Buzz is a DAW despite taking an atypical approach.
