Im producing in reason 5 for a music class and all i have got is the stuff thats stock with reason so thats Thor, Malstrom, and Subtractor. Im not really used to any of this stuff so my sounds are sounding pretty wimpy. Im not trying to get anything really crazy like any growls or anything im more just trying to keep it simple but still be a powerful element in the mix.

Heres a couple of examples of some really good sounds that im kinda trying to get the hang of - im kinda looking for stuff thats kinda got some funk too it

comes in at 0:38 kinda hard too miss

griz, kill paris, and gramatik all have some pretty funky stuff as well as pretty lights too. Ive heard that pretty lights, griz, and gramatik all use hardware (idk bout kill paris) but wouldnt i still be able to get sounds close to these using analog wavetables?

Im assuming these are saw waves but like i said, i dont really know what to do with what im making to make it really dominant. Ive always been so used to massive and using the tubes to do this but now i cant and i dont know how to substitute this.

Two saw waves detuned, a subtle bit of white noise, distortion/overdrive, then high pass at about 125-150Hz and EQ a small amount of mids out (around 400-750Hz) and add a sub layer under it.

Layering octaves, reverb and chorus.

have 2 saw waves, add an envelope with slooowww attack to pitch bend one of them to 16 cents (very small) and pitch bend the other to maybe 24 cents. Whatever sounds nice, adds some energy i think

Basically, the key is to have more energy in the upper mids and highs, and to eq out some lower mids to get rid of mud and make it sound crunchier.

So mess around with some slightly detuned saw waves, distort/boost the upper mids and highs, cut out the lows completely and shelve out some of the lower mids. Then layer it with a sub.

Also try using a compressor. For some reason squashing the shit out of distorted saw wave basses usually gives really nice results, plus if you squash it enough you can put some attack time on it to give you a kind of punchy impact each time the saws start. Is nice.

If you're using Reason (I switched to Logic back at v4) after high passing, try using the Scream 4 on it, a lot of tape and a little tube to really saturate the saw before layering the sub under it.

In case anybodys interested this is what i came up with

Soundcloud

I used the thor (but really it could be done in any synth) and i used 3 saw waves, both a formant and comb filter, and i had a hard clipper on. Then i threw a little bit of reverb on it and then layered a sub below it. I think it turned it pretty well for what i was going for. Thanks for the help guys :Q:
