Hi, I've recently come into a little bit of cash and have about £500 to spend on monitors. From doing some research i've decided its probably going to be the krk rokit 8s or the mackie hr624s (at the reduced price turnkey are selling at). The rokits are the only pro monitor i've used before and i like them, does anyone have experience with the mackies?. I noticed the krks have a better freq response than the mackies, i found this suprising considering the difference in price normally.

Are there other factors i should be considering here?

Does anyone have other reccomendations for monitors in my price range?.

Do i need to budget for stands as well?.

Any advice you guys could give would be much apreciated.

I recently bought the Mackies after doing some research and taking a listen in my local digitial village.

I took down some tracks I knew well and listened across a selection of monitors in the £300 -> £700 price range, the Mackies stood out a mile! The KRK's were not one of the monitors available for me to test but I had heard them in a previous visit and was not as impressed by them as I was with the 624's.

After mixing on the 624's for about a month now I don't know how I've gone so long without them. They are a great nearfield monitor for small to medium studios. They pick out even the smallest flaws in a mix and you can be sure that when things sound good on them they tend to sound good on other systems (or so has been the case for me: laptop, ipod, hifi, car etc)

Just go down to your local store and ask to listen to a bunch of monitors and see which to you sound the best.

P.S. Regarding stands, I'm still looking for a pair of stands with spiked bases and rubber pads for under the monitor that would raise my Mackies up about 6-7" so that the tweaters are at ear level. If anyone knows of a good pair at a good price let me know

depending which speakers you go for, some can be attached to mic stands (eg genelecs) and these can come with adjustable heights

otherwise you can even look into speaker stands from richer sounds etc, especially one with spikes to secure them BUT be careful to check their weight bearing limits as monitors heavily outweigh your average hi-fi stuff!
