In the latest episode, we set the challenge to Tom Demac, a London-based producer who's been releasing music for a decade now. It was 2010 where things really started to take off for Demac, however, with the release of 'Critical Distance Pt. 2′ -- a track that Seth Troxler publicly said that he wished he'd signed. Since then he's released on Aus Music and Drumcode, as well as his regular home Hypercolour.

Yeah, this one was particularly sickening. Black key bassline though was a bit of a cop out, but overall it was fucking impressive.

Think it's a matter of workflow as much as anything else. He obviously knows what he's doing and how to do it. He admitted the ideas weren't anything groundbreaking, and that once he's past the first 10mins mark that's when the drama starts.
I could probably do a beat in 10mins with a couple of plinky plonky bits, but it would no way stand up to some of my 'finished' tracks.

I've always considered them intertwined, but I see your point.
Helps having a studio wired up without having to plug and unplug things as well I guess

I'm glad you see my point, because expilcating it was going to be difficult and maybe even impossible at this point.
And yeah, everything it its place, and a place for everything.
Some of the younger guys, maybe sinestepper up there, that have trouble finishing songs simply need to finish a few so they start to develop their process of finishing songs. From there, once the framework is set, jeez, it really is nothing.

I've never seen the problem with 'finishing' an arrangement once you've got 16 bars to roll with. Copy it a few times (4 or 8 depending) then start cutting elements in and out to create a structure, add some automation, maybe some side chained white noise ( ) then you've got a basic outline. Any issues will then easily identify yourself, so you have the option of fixing on the fly or else stripping it down and starting all over again.

Finish as in have a track that can stand alone as something with structure, or finish as something that you are 100% happy with.

Haha, you coy bastard. I think I'll make it out of this life without ever reaching that 100% mark. But yeah, something that has a start middle and end, and some type of unifying theme and drive and arc.

Every step I take is one step closer to 100% completion of life.
Though I need to get a move on with planning my Greek excursion this year, admittedly.

Drum machine MIDI synced with a synth w/ keyboard and you've a basic all hardware setup.
