short review of this here video:

probably made from the perspective of a person who doesn't dj themselves. i kinda understand those guys because they don't really have to actually do anything but it looks dumb if they just stand there so they just fiddle with random knobs that don't really affect the song. i do that sometimes myself when i'm playing a song that i just want to play from start to finish without interruption. usually im just mixing stuff in an out which actually involves a lot of knob fiddling. song was absolute gash, incredibly lame shit. i have no idea who these ppl are, don't care even. hands in the air thats wack. idiots

tbf when i'm djing and i'm letting the song play for a minute or two, i do find myself microadjusting the eqs or the gain just so my hands have something to do. especially if theres a few nerves during the set sometimes i just want my hands to be doing something.
i find myself singing along quite alot of the time if its a vocal tune lol

yh a bit of extra knob fiddling is ok but fucking pitch adjusting the cdj with no headphones or even serato to look at isn't imo

These guys are mixing intros and outros of tracks that are all the same bpm. You could do it deaf, no headphones isn't surprising (or just using booth monitors instead, because again its dead simple). Laidback Luke is one of the few good DJ's in the house (bigroom) scene, but the rest of them are boring. It's just a shame that when people think of DJing these are the guys they look to, when there are plenty of people actually doing it well.

We were standing over the sound booth for a show and watched a guy play all of the tracks off an iPod for the DJ. Maybe the DJ was throwing stuff over top of his iPod track but shit...I thought people at the least could queue up their own tracks.

I saw Steve Aoki way back in the day as a young lad, before electro blew up like it has now (/hipstr) He spent the whole time swinging from the rafters of the bar and pouring grey goose into people's mouths. Tracks were changing while the decks were 5 feet behind him. Didn't even make an attempt at seeming like he was doing anything. He'd occasionally put his headphones on and bounce up and down and then take them off and go back to crowd surfing.

Baffles me. I always try to fathom what regular people think in scenarios like that. Seems like a lot of people think the DJ just makes the music they're hearing on the spot through psychokinesis or something.

I saw this "live" electronic duo at a music festival last summer and they faked the shit out of their set but nobody else seemed to notice but me and my buddy. One dude was just babysitting an ableton session while the other guy faked guitar solos really obviously. Like playing a powerchord shape while there's shredding going on ahah. They covered Rollin n Scratchin and faked the filter sweeps Why wouldn't you want to actually perform that live? I don't see how it's more fun to fake something like that.

wait wut? i don't usually use headphones when i DJ, mainly cause when I learned to DJ, I didn't have the right adapter to be able to use my headphones with the controller, so that's just the way i've always done it.

don't see how that makes you someone that shouldn't be taken seriously. if anything, DJing without headphones takes more skill imo.

I think he means DJing without headphones as in not actually cueing your tracks and just syncing/launching clips? Trying to beatmatch without headphones sounds like a recipe for ka-thunk ka-thunk trainwrecks. Unless you're using booth monitors but that isn't really viable in a small club setup.

i beatmatch without headphones. well, sometimes i do use the headphones for that reason if i'm a little unsure about the transition, but i can do it without them fine the majority of the time (without sync). as long as you know your music well enough, and make sure you got the grid set up well on rekordbox, then it's not difficult. and both songs are at the same bpm, obviously.

if you beatmatched em at different bpms, then they would instantly become unmatched.

that's putting them at the same bpm manually, not with sync.
