How would somebody go about clearing a sample from a TV broadcast (News/Soaps/etc.)

Long story short i've sampled a short line of speech from Coronation Street in a song and was wondering how to clear it.There have also been multiple News reports and documentaries that I would like to use as well.

Apologies if this has been asked before, didn't see much about it elsewhere.

Thanks in advance.

Christ what is it with the new generation trying to clear samples? Unless you release a tune that gets huge don't worry about shit sample everything and have fun. Even at a dubstep level a late I sampled Bill Cosby on (OMG) only got pressed to 500 LPS and he never found out so fuck it sample everything unless you get a cease and desist keep doing it.

Well, basically you are going to have to contact whoever owns the rights to the material and pay them for clearance...if they even want to give it you. SO you'll have to research the contact info and get in touch with someone.

For Coronation Street it'd be Granada Television.

Quay Street
Manchester
M60 9EA

For the news broadcasts it's the same, whatever network produced it is who to call.

Firstly, please don't make music with Coronation Street samples. Please.

Anyhow, yeah as others have said don't worry about it unless your tune gets huge. It's more hassle than it's worth.

Releasing it for free doesn't protect one from copyright infringement, at least in the US. FWIW. But honestly...I think the paranoia of bedroom producers over sample clearance is mostly vanity.

Yeah, it's my understanding that if you sample something you don't have the rights to you COULD get in trouble. Just the fact that you used it without permission, whether it's something you're giving away for free or trying to sell, you could still get fucked. But like some others said, don't worry about it unless you firmly believe 100% that your music will be huge and everyone will hear it. But if that is the case, we need to have an entirely different conversation.

Unless you're The Verve, Vanilla Ice, Biz Markie, MC Hammer, Shut Up And Dance, Public Enemy, Notorious B.I.G., or any one of the many other artists that fucked themselves by releasing tracks with uncleared and highly recognizable samples. The Verve lost 100% of all royalties on their biggest hit ever. Others have wound up getting cease and desist orders or lawsuits targeting the parent label.

No. No they didn't - that's the whole point. At minimum those guys lost money that coulda gone in their pockets but had to pay lawyer fees instead: at worst, they got famous off the song but never saw a dime from it.

Yeah I wouldn't worry too much about it mate, general rule of thumb if it looks like you are going to be making some serious moneys from the track that's when the lawyers come knocking ;-)
